Hmm… How do I start?  Build or connect to prior knowledge  Provide relative information for better comprehension  Repetitiveness of high frequency words that students will be expected to use throughout the course of study  Highlights vocabulary  Stimulates conversation in the classroom  Conversational aids in discussions  Visual scaffolds that help students take control of literacy skills and strategies  Fosters reading and writing

3 Use color ! Be creative!  Find a location that is visible at all times and use that same area for every word wall  Words should be useful to students  Start with 5 to 7 words and add additional words slowly  Select high frequency words that you expect students to use  Do not over crowd the words  You may want to remove or change words as you progress through the units  Allow students to be creative and develop the word wall

4 Make words attractive!  All are collections of words that are appropriate for your CTE content area  Words are selected for specific instructional purposes Make them practical!

5 Use pictures!Make them hands-on!  Use words daily to reinforce new learning and reiterate concepts  Create an new word wall 2 weeks prior to the start of a new unit  Collections of words should be cumulative
