1 The Symptom Study Overview Cohort study with nested qualitative study Set in 2 University centres: Cambridge & Durham Aim to recruit 200 cases with each cancer (lung, colorectal, pancreas) & up to 120 interviews

2 The Symptom Study Objectives To identify symptoms associated with later presentation & with later stage at diagnosis To identify other patient factors associated with later presentation or later stage at diagnosis To understand the way in which these symptoms are recognised, interpreted and acted upon by patients The findings will inform consumer awareness campaigns & underpin development of general-practice based interventions aimed at earlier diagnosis of symptomatic cancer.

4 Participant recruitment Respiratory symptoms (Recruitment ended December 2012) Original target: 200 cancers; 880 participants At End of 2012: 143 Cancers, 981 Participants Colorectal symptoms (Recruitment to end March 2013) Original target: 200 cancers; 2500 participants At End of 2012: 141 Cancers, 2275 Participants

5 Pancreatic symptoms Original target: 200 cancers; 1000 participants At End of 2012: 36 cancers; 105 participants Current recruitment: Addenbrookes- HPB clinic, Fast Track Jaundice Service, Ultrasound, West Suffolk

6 Funding study extension until June 2014 to increase participant recruitment Additional recruitment at Addenbrookes & West Suffolk Hospitals Extension to further hospitals Projection of approx. 500 additional participants would be recruited

7 Study Eligibility Patients aged 40 years or older Newly referred with: abdominal pain, abdominal mass, jaundice, unexplained weight loss or any other concerns about pancreatic cancer Sent a study pack by post including invitation letter, consent form & questionnaire
