BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING The department offers a four-year engineering curriculum leading to a B.S. in biomedical engineering, which prepares students for a wide variety of careers in industry, hospitals or research laboratories, or for further education in graduate school. The department also offers a four-year engineering curriculum that, together with required premedical courses, leads to a B.S. degree in biomedical engineering: premedical. RESEARCH THRUSTS BIOMEDICAL COMPUTATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES BIOMEDICAL NANOSCALE SYSTEMS BIOMOLECULAR/GENETIC ENGINEERING BIOPHOTONICS CARDIOVASCULAR NEUROSCIENCE CAREERS: MEDICAL DEVICES, TISSUE ENGINEERING, GENETIC TREATMENT
23
CHEMICAL ENGINEERING AND MATERIALS SCIENCE The department offers two accredited degree programs, chemical engineering and materials science engineering, and a minor in materials science engineering. Students can participate in laboratory or field research, and many are active in professional society student chapters and clubs, including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the Materials Science Engineering Club (MatSci) and the UCI student chapter of the American Nuclear Society. Our goal is to graduate students who are prepared for a career as practicing engineers or for continuing their education in graduate school at a research university. RESEARCH THRUSTS BIOMOLECULAR ENGINEERING AND BIOMATERIALS ENERGY AND SUSTAINABILITY ENVIRONMENT MICROSTRUCTURED MATERIALS NANOTECHNOLOGY AND NANOENGINEERING CAREERS: ENERGY, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT, PLASTICS, PHARMACEUTICALS
24
CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING The department offers a rich and diverse educational experience for students interested in majoring in civil engineering or environmental engineering. Courses are taught by world-class scholars who maintain connections with industry and are involved in developing cutting-edge technologies in earthquake and structural engineering, transportation systems, water resources and environmental engineering. All undergraduate students have the opportunity to participate in design and research projects. Programs prepare students for leadership careers in industry and for continuing their education in graduate school. RESEARCH THRUSTS STRUCTURES WATER TRANSPORTATION CAREERS: CONSULTING, TRANSPORTATION, POLLUTION CONTROL, STRUCTURES
25
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE The department offers majors in computer engineering, computer science and engineering, and electrical engineering. Students have the opportunity to take classes from world-class scholars who are working at the forefront of computer science and engineering, computer system design, high-speed analog and digital circuit design, signal and image processing, electromagnetics, photonics, high-efficiency power electronic circuits, and alternative energy power generation. Students also have the chance to participate in research and design projects. The department has two research centers: one specializing in communications, Center for Pervasive Communications & Computing, and one in MEMS, Integrated Nanosystems Research Facility. RESEARCH THRUSTS CIRCUITS AND DEVICES COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING SYSTEMS CAREERS: COMPUTER HARDWARE/SOFTWARE DESIGN, CIRCUIT DESIGN, POWER SYSTEMS, BIOMEDICAL ELECTRONICS
26
MECHANICAL AND AEROSPACE ENGINEERING The department offers ABET-accredited bachelors of science degrees in mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering. The undergraduate programs blend fundamentals with hands-on design experience and include research experience in the department laboratories. The department offers a rich and diverse educational experience for students interested in majoring in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or their combination. Students can dual major in mechanical and aerospace engineering by satisfying the degree requirements for both majors.
