Source B Hitler speaking to crowd 1933 Source A Reichstag election results 1928 Party vote % Social Democratic 9,153,000 29.8 Nationalist 4,381,600 14.2 Center 3,712,200 12.1 Communist 3,264,800 10.6 People's 2,679,700 8.7 Democratic (State) 1,505,700 4.9 Economic 1,397,100 4.5 Bavarian People's 945,600 3.0 National Socialist (Nazi) 810,100 2.6 You should make direct reference to both sources to show the change that has occurred – avoid just extracting from the source , instead make an inference or analytical point from them. 3 Why was Hitler invited to become Chancellor?
Textbooks page President Hindenburg: 84 years old. “A relic from the past”. Former army leader who was, by 1932, effectively ruling Germany with the support of a tiny group of rich, conservative industrialists and army leaders. The Reichstag offered little leadership. Hindenburg hated Hitler. He had defeated Hitler in the February 1932 Presidential elections. He called Hitler “the little Bohemian corporal”. He does not like Hitler; does not want to make him Chancellor!

4 What did this new Government look like?
President appoints Chancellor. Usually the leader of the largest party became Chancellor, but the other parties in the Reichstag would not work with Hitler. Addtionally, Hindenburg does not want Hitler as Chancellor.

5 Reichstag elections: July 1932
I hate Hitler.. But can I use him...? Nazis won 37.3% of the vote (230 seats) – their best result ever. They were the largest party in the Reichstag. Hitler demanded to be made Chancellor. Hindenburg appointed Franz von Papen as Chancellor, but Hitler refused to work with him. Another election was called.

6 Reichstag elections: November 1932
The Nazis lost 34 seats in these elections. The Communists increased their support to 100 seats. The right wing government realised they would have to look for more support from the right wing in order to stave off the threat posed by the Communists (who are on the extreme left of the political spectrum). Nazis in decline Nov 1932.

7 V Power Struggle General von Schleicher:
Former army leader. The adviser to Hindenburg. He turned against von Papen – and advised Hindenburg to do the same. Distrusted Hitler. Franz von Papen: Rich Catholic nobleman. A favourite of Hindenburg. Distrusted Hitler

8 The Big Mistake! Hitler manoeuvres his way to become Chancellor.
Von Schleicher was reluctantly appointed Chancellor by Hindenburg in December 1932. Von Papen was looking for revenge on Von Schleicher. Von Papen tried to persuade Hindenburg to make him chancellor and Hitler vice-chancellor. Schleicher is having difficulty keeping a Reichstag majority, so Hindenburg and Von Papen offered Hitler the vice-chancellorship in order to get the Nazi Party's support. Hitler declined the offer, insisting on being the chancellor. Von Papen and Hindenburg thought they would be able to control Hitler and agreed to Hitler’s demands to be Chancellor.

9 Why do the elites feel they can work with Hitler and the Nazis?
They like: The electoral support of the Nazis. Anti-Communism. Some like the Nationalism of the Nazis: Anti-Versailles and pro- rearmament. Anti-democracy They believe they can control Hitler: He is from humble origin and just a vulgar upstart that they can use and then remove.

10 Key Question: Why was Hitler invited to become Chancellor?

11 30 January 1933: Hitler appointed Chancellor
Adolf Hitler poses with members of his new government soon after his appointment as Chancellor.

12 What did this new Government look like?
Although he is now Chancellor, he still owes his job to Hindenburg and cannot just take over doing whatever he likes at this time.

13 “Not the most comfortable seat!”
An American cartoon, early 1933. What is the message of the cartoon? How useful is it in understanding how Hitler was viewed internationally in 1933? Remember: At first, only three members of the cabinet were Nazis: Hitler himself, Wilhelm Frick heading the strategically important Interior ministry, and Hermann Göering as Minister without portfolio.

14 Who killed Weimar democracy?
Adolf Hitler: Hated democracy -Munich Putsch. Nazis attacked their opponents. Leader of the largest party in Appointed Chancellor in Jan Then destroyed democracy. Became Fuhrer. Hindenburg: President Hostile to Hitler, but appointed Hitler Chancellor in Jan 1933 Franz von Papen: Against democracy, formed a non-party group ‘cabinet of barons’ from the elite. Made a deal with Hitler to be Vice- Chancellor if Hitler was made Chancellor. Persuaded Hindenburg to make Hitler Chancellor General von Schleicher: Wanted to protect the interests of the army. Dismissed by Hindenburg when von Papen worked against him. He resisted Hitler’s appointment to Chancellor. Who do you blame and why?
