5 DRAFT Journals Most education journals available in electronic format Search the Library catalogue: [URL] May be able to link to the full text journal E-journals list is at [URL] Can filter the list to look at journals in particular subject collections Directory of Open Access Journals: http://www.doaj.org/ All papers in these journals freely accessible 5

6 DRAFT Discovering and rating journals Journal Citation Reports (JCR) is a database which allows you to view lists of journals in various disciplinesJournal Citation Reports The database also allows you to rate these journals according to various criteria Task: use JCR to find out which journal in the Education & Educational Research subject category is the highest rated according to impact factor 6

7 DRAFT Search Strategy Think about the terms you use Are there alternative phrases? Use truncation and wildcard symbols (*, ?) Link search terms: AND, NOT to narrow OR to broaden Use “quotation marks” to search for phrases Search for both UK and US spelling Use brackets to organise your search e.g.: “virtual learning” AND (“further education” OR “higher education”) 7

8 DRAFT TeachingLearning Only finds articles containing both teaching and learning Finds articles containing either teaching or learning Finds articles which do contain the term teaching but do not also contain the term learning 8

10 DRAFT Bibliographic databases Bibliographic databases index journal articles Abstracts often included Allow searching content in a range of journals Only high quality scholarly writing is included Option to download search results e.g. to reference management software There may be links to full-text material if your institution subscribes to the electronic version, with options to locate print material if electronic is not available 10

13 DRAFT Task To apply your database searching skills: -Use either British Education Index OR Web of Science to start searching for articles on a topic of your choice. Email yourself a list of the references you find 13

14 DRAFT Other useful databases for education SCOPUS large multidisciplinary database IBSS an index of literature in the social sciences and related disciplines Nexis UK (formerly Lexis Nexis Executive) full text database of news articles PsychINFO Index of literature in psychology and psychological aspects of related disciplines including material on educational psychology 14
