5 Orange County Public Schools Big Idea 2: Color-Coded Feedback Use color-coding and marking the text to give feedback help your child focus on areas of revision in their writing. After your child completes their essay, have them underline in colors. Underline the thesis and topic sentences in red. Underline quoted evidence in green. Underline paraphrased evidence in blue. Underline elaboration/commentary in purple. Use text markers to provide your child with specific feedback and help them focus on areas to revise.

6 Orange County Public Schools Big Idea 3: Organization Essay organization questions: How does each topic sentence connect to the thesis statement/controlling idea? Are the topic sentences specific so that the reader can understand the paragraph’s main subject and point? How do the topic sentences relate? How does each of the topic sentences connect to allow a structured progression and flow for the essay? How does the essay respond to all aspects of the writing task?

7 Orange County Public Schools Big Idea 4: Global vs. Local Revision Concerns Global RevisionLocal Revision Global revisions focus on the writer’s ideas, content, and essay organization. – Does the essay respond to all aspects of the writing task? – Does the essay include a solid claim? – Is the essay appropriately organized? – Is there sufficient evidence and elaboration to support the claim? – Is the essay’s introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion clearly established and developed? Local revisions are focused on minor errors within sentences. – Are there grammatical errors? – Are there spelling errors? – Are there citation issues? – Can word choice be improved with the use of stronger words?
