4. PARCC Test Administration  No seniors will take PARCC assessments this year.  All students in grades 9 – 11 will sit for all components of PARCC ELA testing.  All students in grades 9 – 11 that are enrolled in Algebra 1, Geometry or Algebra 2 (or the special education equivalent courses) will sit for all components of PARCC mathematics testing.  11 th grade students that completed Algebra 2 prior to this year will not be taking any components of the PARCC mathematics testing.  Students enrolled in two different courses in a content area will sit for PARCC testing in only one course.  All components of PARCC testing will be delivered on desktop or laptop computers. Students are strongly encouraged to bring earbuds or headphones for all days of PARCC testing.

Does the PARCC Count?  Currently, the NJDOE requires all students to demonstrate proficiency on a standardized assessment as one of the criteria required to earn a high school diploma.  Because PARCC is new and needs to be normed, the NJDOE has outlined a series of “Substitute Competency Assessments” (SCAs) and the minimum cut scores that could be used on these assessments to satisfy this graduation requirement for students in the classes of 2016, 2017, and 2018.  As such, performance on PARCC has varying degrees of importance depending on the student.

Refusing to Test  We aware of a growing movement in our state and nationwide of parents and students that are opposed to the Common Core standards and PARCC testing.  Parents and students have the right to refuse to test.  We urge those considering test refusal to insure that they understand how this could impact a student in terms of graduation.  Consider the benefits of taking a rigorous test through an online platform, even if you’ve already met the cut scores for SCAs.  Students refusing to test are still required to attend school on testing days. Students will be in a supervised area and expected to participate in self- directed learning activities.
