1 January 9 th and 12 th, 2015 Society and Culture during the Industrial Revolution Preview Activity: What effects do you think industrialization had on Europe initially?

3 Emigration and Growth of Cities Emigration—people moving away from their native lands People emigrated to look for work, escape discrimination, or to escape a poor economy By the year 1900, several cities had populations over 1 million Suburbs grew with new advances in public transportation

4 Sanitation New advances in sanitation: Running water Flush toilets Public sewers Paved streets Refrigeration

5 Education After 1870, laws were passed requiring public education for all children Middle and upper classes attended high school and college Lower classes only attended as long as the law required—then went to work to help support families

6 Psychology Ivan Pavlov— experimented with dogs and concluded that human actions can be changed with training Sigmund Freud—studied the unconscious mind and analyzed dreams (psychoanalysis) Freud founded modern psychiatry—the study and treatment of mental illness

7 Sports Football (soccer)—became the first spectator sport Rugby evolved from football and became very popular American football was developed in the 1870’s by Walter Camp—first pro league in 1920 1845—written rules were published for baseball 1860’s—first pro baseball team was formed—the Cincinatti Red Stockings
