 KEEP THE INTRODUCTION SHORT  CREATE INTEREST Suitable introduction phrases for the narrative letter: I can’t wait to tell you about what happened...... I am dying to tell you........ Wait until you hear............. You won’t believe what....... You’ll never believe..... You’ll never guess....... DON’T FORGET TO SAY WHEN THE INCIDENT HAPPENED This morning/this afternoon/just now/ a few minutes ago, etc INTRODUCTION

 SET THE SCENE - Who were you with? - What were you doing? -When were you there? - Why were you there? I was walking home from school with David on Tuesday...... My mum and I had been in the city centre looking for a birthday present for Dad...... The scene you describe should be routine and ordinary. This will provide a contrast with the main event and make the story more interesting. For example: We were chatting about what we were going to do at the weekend... what we had for homework I was waiting for the bus...... I was looking out of the window...... BODY OF THE LETTER

Include time sequence phrase  I’d just+ past tense, when......  The moment/the minute he+past tense,.......  I was just about to...... when.....  Just as we were about to catch the bus, there was a deafening noise.  As I/she/we+past tense/ past continuous.....  Before I shut the door, I had checked my keys  After what seemed like ages,........  By this time  In the end  For the first time in my life  It took only a moment  In the morning/afternoon/evening  Within no time  About.... 6 Include Connectors  But, and, until, although, etc.  Include feelings Describe your feelings at each stage of the event. I was disappointed to learn that........... horrified realize surprised see delighted find furious discover amazed

Include personalising and support phrases *You need to express your friend’s knowledge of your character, what you would do, how you would react in certain situations and what your views are on certain topics. You know how frightened I am of...... I don’t need to tell you how excited I was... As you know, I can’t stand.... You know me- I always panic in emergencies Another way to personalise is to involve your friend in the event by referring to his abilities, interests, etc. I wish you’d been here. You’d have known what to do. It’s a shame/pity you weren’t here... I wonder what you’d have done if you’d been there.

 The conclusion needs to be brief. Well, I must dash now- I’ve got to tell Sam all about it. Well, I must go now- I want to call Sarah and tell her the news. I think it was one of the happiest moments I can ever remember! * Analyze the letter on page 96. CONCLUDING A NARRATIVE LETTER
