6 SusChem Brokerage Event 14 September 2011 Project idea SUSCHEM BROKERAGE EVENT 2012 PROJECT IDEA (BRIEF SUMMARY)  Novel energy harvesting devices to store energy coming from motion and transducing into electrical.  The motion would create vibrations in a cantilever or a diaphragm which with a suitable associated piezoelectric material could create sufficient energy to charge a capacitor and hence power the sensors and extend the lifetime of the system.  A high value capacitor with small surface area would be required to store the charge and discharge it when required to perform a certain function. Because of the small surface area constraint, a high value capacitance has to be achieved through the use of high-k dielectric materials or through the use of textured electrode surfaces.  The electronics needs to include these two components as well as providing power management that enables charge to be retained long enough to power RF transmissions that provide the localisation and communication functions.

9 SusChem Brokerage Event 14 September 2011 Project idea SUSCHEM BROKERAGE EVENT 2012 PROJECT IDEA (BRIEF SUMMARY)  The proposed project will address the need for the provision of a complete monitoring system for a network of gas piping.  The concept is a smart connector which joins pipes together and which includes the electronic systems required to identify the presence of leaks, gas temperature, gas flow rate, pressure and general system level integrity.  Each connector will communicate with all of the other connectors resulting in a complete mapping system for the pipe network thus enabling the operators to efficiently monitor the system and respond to any emergencies that may arise.  Two separate nanotechnology based sensor concepts will be compared for their ability to perform with the required specifications. o A nanowire based methane monitoring device which has considerably higher sensitivity that existing state of the art will be integrated into a full electronic system and incorporated into the connector. o A second sensor system (acoustic, nano-grass, etc)
