Purpose This lesson explains the differences between community service and volunteerism.

1. Define volunteerism by identifying the three basic concepts that explain the meaning of the word. 2. List services that cadets can provide the community. 3. Produce a graphic representation of the number of hours cadets volunteer.

Because volunteerism keeps teens occupied, students who volunteer are less likely to abuse drugs. Students who volunteer are also more likely to: do well in school vote in elections gain an understanding of civic responsibility.
