2 Purpose This lesson explains the differences between community service and volunteerism.

3 1. Define volunteerism by identifying the three basic concepts that explain the meaning of the word. 2. List services that cadets can provide the community. 3. Produce a graphic representation of the number of hours cadets volunteer.

4 4. Identify the benefits of volunteerism to the individual and the community. 5. Develop a presentation in support of volunteerism.

9  There are many reasons why students should volunteer.  While required community service can provide worthwhile experiences for students, it should not be confused with volunteerism.

10  Volunteering helps others.  Volunteering looks good on your college application.

11  Because volunteerism keeps teens occupied, students who volunteer are less likely to abuse drugs.  Students who volunteer are also more likely to:  do well in school  vote in elections  gain an understanding of civic responsibility.
