EASTER CURIOSITIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

A priest throws a boiled egg to a member of a choir who passes it to another person. The winner is the person who is holding the egg exactly at the strike of 12 noon! Surprising? This is one Easter custom which used to be observed in the Middle Ages. Look out! Catch the egg!

Easter Egg roll…

Each year at Easter, an egg roll race takes place on the White House lawn. Only children are allowed to participate. This tradition has been going on For 135 years.

The Bulgarians must be the nation who most enjoys egg tapping at Easter breakfast. Why? FBulgarian families can prepare as many as 100 coloured eggs. With many eggs, they can egg Tap up to forty days after Easter. Eggs which win their games are thought to bring health. They are kept for the whole year.

The eggs are made of gold and decorated with gem stones. The first one was delivered to the Tsar Alexander III in 1884 as a gift for the Tsarina. Precious coloured eggs quickly became an extremely popular gift idea. The most famous and valuable coloured eggs were created at Tsar Alexander II’s court by a Russian jeweller, Peter Carl Faberge.

Chocolate holiday The biggest chocolate egg was 8.5m High and is in the Guinness Book of Records. It was made by Argentinean confectioners in April 2012.

Why do we link Easter with bunnies and rabbits? It comes from an old German tradition. Bunnies and rabbits were symbols of spring and new life.

The biggest rabbits can reach up to 1.2m in length and weigh up to 20kg! They belong to a giant continental species. Monster rabbit!

A contest for the tallest Easter palm has been held every Easter for over 50 years in Lipnica Murowana. The palms can be monstrous in size. However, there is one condition: a palm must be possible to hold in someone’s hands. Zbigniew Urbanski has been undefeated since 2010 with the palm he created measuring 36.04m in length. Will there be anyone capable of building a bigger one this year?

On Easter Sunday, in New York, on 5th Avenue …

… one can come across a colourful crowd. People wear huge and unusual hats.

There is an island in a remote corner of the Pacific called Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island. It was discovered on 5th April 1772 by the Dutch explorer, Jacob Roggeveen. It was Easter Sunday on that day.

Easter Island is unique and mysterious. Over 600 monumental stone statues called moai have been erected there.

Scientists have wondered how the islanders, living 1000 years ago, were capable of raising statues weighing up to 75 tons without modern cranes.

Hurray! The holiday has started! Pretend sorrow marks the faces of Spaniards saying goodbye to Lent. The burial ceremony of a huge paper-made sardine honours the occasion. A funeral procession goes straight to the sea, where the sardine is dumped into the water.
