14 GOAL SETTING Over 90% of studies show that goal setting has a consistent and powerful effect on behaviour and success. It is important that the right kinds of goals are set to ensure focus and direction. Goals help to organise training and competition and ensure targets are being met. There are different types of goals that can be set -

15 Process Goal - This focuses on technique and practice - what a performer has to do to be successful. Often this means breaking down skills and practicing them in parts e.g. Practice a sprinting technique Performance Goals – This is the focus on how they are going to win allowing to judge and compare performance with others, and own performers e.g. Beating your PB. Outcome Goals – This is related to the end result e.g. winning the competition, reaching elite level. Too much focus on this can lead to a decline in performance. Types of goals

16 Performance Profiling The Performance Profile is simply a tool that can provide an awareness of a person’s perspective of their own performance. In doing so, it ensures that both the managers and staff are “on the same wavelength”. Essentially, it allows somebody to identify the qualities that they perceive are required to perform consistently well and to rate their current ability on each quality. Once completed the Performance Profile highlights important qualities to work on, ensuring that the athlete and coach/manager and staff are both involved in the process
