1 OVERVIEW of the ISTE NETS for Administrators Presented by Kevin Brady and Alison Fricke

2 What is the ISTE? 3 National Education Technology Standards (NETS) ISTE published the National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETSS) in 1998 after almost three years of development engaging a broad range of stakeholders. They documented a U.S. consensus defining what students needed to know about and be able to do with technology. The standards, used in every U.S. state and many countries, are credited by most with significantly influencing expectations for students and creating a target of excellence relating to technology.

7 Background of of ISTE Administrator Standards The Technology Standards for School Administrators Project is the result of conversations among several members of the leadership group for the TSSA Project. They recognized that teacher capability to make effective use of technology as an instructional resource was absolutely essential. Yet there seemed to be less recognition of the importance of the role Administrators play in this regard than was warranted. As the teacher standards developed by the ISTE Nets Project had been valuable in helping to define exactly what skills and knowledge teachers needed, they believed it was time for a parallel project focused on school administrators.They recognized that the development of standards for school administrators should be a broadly participatory process involving major stakeholder organizations. In February 2000, the TSSA Collaborative was officially formed, in 2001 the standards were finalized.

8 Collaboration Several organizations recognized the need for technology standards for school administrators and realized that it made sense to work together rather than to devise divergent and competing sets of standards.

Basic Technology Skills: Educational leaders demonstrate technology proficiency and apply technology to enhance their professional practice and to increase their own productivity and that of others. 2. Leadership Skills: Educational leaders inspire a shared vision and plan for comprehensive integration of technology in their schools. They understand that technology can support productive systems for teaching and learning, assessment, evaluation, and administration; and they ensure the implementation of their technology plan. The integration of technology includes curricular design, instructional strategies and learning environments that maximize teaching and learning. 3. Social, Legal, and Ethical Issues: Educational leaders understand the social, legal, and ethical issues related to technology and model responsible decision-making related to these issues.
