2 Purpose of Book 1 Provides the setting of Vergil's tale Introduces main characters → Aeneas, Dido, Anchises Jupiter, Juno, and Venus Introduces Aeneas’ goal of reaching Italy

3 Opening Scene I sing of arms and the man... Virgil begins by invoking the Muse He explains that he is telling the story of a man (Aeneas) who has fled from Troy in hopes of reaching Latium He explains that Aeneas’ journey is made difficult by the gods, especially by Juno He asks the Muse to explain Juno’s anger

5 The Trojans’ Challenges The Trojans are sailing from Sicily to Italy Juno convinces Aeolus, god of the winds, to create a storm Aeneas panics and even prays for death Neptune is angry and stops the storm 13 of their 20 ships are lost

6 Landing in Africa The Trojans land in Africa At this time, Venus complains to Jupiter that Aeneas’ destiny is not being fulfilled Jupiter comforts her and tells her that there will be glory for the Romans He then sends Mercury to tell Dido to welcome Aeneas and his people to Carthage.

7 Carthage When Aeneas goes into the woods with Achates, Venus comes to them disguised as a huntress She tells them about Dido’s history: Dido Lived in Tyre with her husband Sychaeus Sychaeus was murdered, but later came to Dido in a dream and told her to leave leave Tyre She fled to Libya, where Carthage was founded

8 Carthage While in Carthage Aeneas and Achates are amazed by the city They find many of their comrades who were lost during the storm Dido welcomes them all and calls for a feast Venus sends Cupid, who takes the form of Ascanius (Aeneas’s son) and has Dido fall in love with Aeneas

10 Dinner Dido begs Aeneas to tell his story of the Trojan War and his adventures Although it is emotional for him to recall, he finally agrees to tell her, which begins Book 2
