1 Reading Schedule Work with your group to determine the reading schedule for your lit circle book. New reading MUST be done for each Literature Circle Meeting (see below). Keep in mind you will having writing & responding homework 3 times a week. Tues/Wed HW for Meeting #2 (due on 3/19-20) Thurs/Fri HW for Meeting #3 (due on 3/23) Mon. 2 Finding the Theme & Message Major and Minor Themes- A major theme is an idea that a writer repeats in his work, making it the most significant idea in a literary work. A minor theme, on the other hand, refers to an idea that appears in a work briefly and gives way to another minor theme. 1.Brainstorm a list of themes present in your text so far. Literary Theme-a message about people, life, and the world we live in that the author wants the reader to understand. 2. Come up with 2 possible messages of your story thus far (this may involve predictions).

5 LC Reading Assignment #1 LITERARY THEME: (INSERT YOUR GROUP’S MESSAGE HERE) OPTION 2-INTRAPERSONAL/VERBAL: Reflect on your own opinion on a particular theme and how the text supports or refutes your opinion using text examples.  100/100 - Personal opinion is clearly expressed, text stance is identified, & textual citations support findings  80/100 - Personal opinion is clearly expressed & text stance is identified, paraphrased examples support findings  60/100 - Personal opinion is clearly expressed & text stance is identified  40/100 - Personal opinion is presented  20/100 - text/opinion is discussed, but may not relate to theme

Connect using specific observations from the text.  100/100 - More than one individual is evaluated, specific details from text are relayed, and quotations (textual or anecdotal) are used.  80/100 - One individual is evaluated, specific details from text are relayed, and quotations (textual or anecdotal) or a paraphrase is used.  60/100 - One individual is evaluated and specific details from text are relayed.  40/100 - One individual is evaluated and generalities from text are relayed.  20/100 - One individual is evaluated

8 LC Reading Assignment #3 LITERARY THEME: (INSERT YOUR MESSAGE HERE) OPTION 5 - MATHEMATICAL/LOGICAL- Create an outline of the events of the reading (including smaller/more specific events) and explain how they connect with a particular theme OR put the facts or information of the reading into categories and identify which category is more prevalent in connection to theme.  100/100 - Several specific details are used and there is a clear and thorough connection to theme.  80/100 - At least 2 specific details are used and there is a clear and thorough connection to theme  60/100 - General ideas are used and there is a connection to theme  40/100 - General ideas are used and there is a vague connection to theme.  20/100 - General ideas are used and there is no connection to theme.

9 LC Reading Assignment #3 LITERARY THEME: (INSERT YOUR MESSAGE HERE) OPTION 6- NATURAL/KINESTHETIC: 1.)Select an element of nature (animal, thunderstorm, oak tree, etc.) to connect with a character/event from the reading OR explain how you would use a physical activity to describe a character/event from the reading. 2.)Explain connections to theme using specific details from the reading.  100/100- Thoughtful & creative element/activity is selected, several specific details are used and there is a clear and thorough connection to theme.  80/100 - Thoughtful & creative element/activity is selected, 2 or more specific details are used and there is a clear and thorough connection to theme.  60/100 - Element/activity is selected, general ideas are used and there is a connection to theme.  40/100- Element/activity is selected, general ideas are used and there is a vague connection to theme.  20/100 - Element/activity is selected and general ideas are used.
