Mrs. Howland Chemistry 10 Rev. Feb 2016

Learners will be able to… Define toxins Explain potential effects on the human body

Chemical properties Chemical changes Chemical formulas Chemical bonding The MOLE Mole conversions CHEMICAL EQUATIONS Balancing chemical equations Stoichiometry Types of chemical reactions TOXINS

What does this video talk about? What are the implications on human health? What was the cause? What is your reaction? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqnaq2Vn-CA

Toxicity = The adverse affects of poisons on the body 4 Types: Local Systemic Acute Chronic

4 Types: Local = Example: burns on skin from corrosive chemical Systemic = Internal exposure and damage; Example: lead poisoning Acute =Short-term; usually reversible damage Chronic = Prolonged exposure; long- term effects; permenant damage All types may be immediate or latent

Surface ~ Skin contact May be absorbed into body Inhalation ~ Respiratory Injestion ~ Eating/drinking

Chlorpyrifos = Pesticide Tolune = Improves octane ratings in gasoline; used to make nylon and plastic drink bottles; solvent in paint and adhesives Manganese = Prevents metal corrosion (stainless steel; soft drink cans) Polychlorinated Biphenyls = Prevents spread of fire; used in insulation, carbon paper, as engine coolant Mercury = Used for fillings; found in fish Fluoride = Toothpaste, water supply Arsenic = Bronzing, pyrotechnics, pesticies (and some foods such as brown rice!)

Toxins react with substances in the body such as ions and oxygen The effects of using the reactants from the body and generating harmful products causes harm Some toxins are not ‘flushed’ from the body and build up over time
