1 Revision Session 2: Sustainability continued All products have a lifecycle. It starts when it is manufactured and goes through to when it is eventually disposed of and possibly recycled. See examples below. http://www.technologystudent.com/prddes1/lifecy1.html TASK: Research into another product lifecycle and present this in the form of a timeline or flow chart. At the end of a products life it is sometimes recycled or will go into a landfill. There are three types of recycling Primary, Secondary and Tertiary.

2 Primary, Secondary and Tertiary  TASK: Read the definitions of the 3 types of recycling Primary Recycling – Second-hand use of a product without changing or altering the product, such as giving clothes to a charity shop or selling on ebay, leaving newspapers & magazines in a dentist/doctors surgery for other people to read. It is simply to reuse it. Secondary Recycling – mechanically cutting/altering the product in some way to use it in another way (without the use of chemicals), such as cutting up magazines to use as a collage, cutting a plastic bottle in half to use as a plant pot. Tertiary Recycling – Completely breaking down a product into molecules using a chemical process and then turning it into a completely new product, such as breaking down rubber car tyres and then re-processing them into computer mouse-mats or plastic bottles broken down chemically and threads re-spun into polyester to make fleece fabric. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLkZ6LzwCQY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLkZ6LzwCQY  TASK: You need to know and understand the terms used above. To reinforce your understanding produce a comic strip which informs people about the differences between each type of recycling.

3 What happens when we don’t recycle? This is what happens when we don’t recycle products. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC1u6rJkyzA TASK: What is the long term impact of using landfills? Our buying habits can then have an effect on other cultures when we go on holiday. TASK: Watch the clip below. How has tourism had a negative impact upon the island of Maldives? What is the positive impact of tourism on this culture? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsayOAWXkqQ Create a mind map of all the topics you have covered. Further revision can be done using the list of revision topics on the WIN
