Texas birds, fish, and water quality - My first adventure using FOSS4G to create an application visualizing data along the TX Coast Brad Neish bneish@HARCresearch.org

About HARC and me Houston Advanced Research Center is a research hub providing independent analysis on energy, air, and water issues to people seeking scientific answers We are focused on building a sustainable future that helps people thrive and nature flourish BA Geography UNC 2009, MGIST NCSU 2012 3 years at ORNL, 3 years at HARC

Past experience ArcGIS API for Silverlight, ArcGIS API for javascript, ArcGIS Online

Coastal waterbird app popular Built on old google maps api Data is old hard, to update Graphs pregenerated http://maps.harcresearch.org/Waterbirds/

Bird data Texas Colonial Waterbird Society (TCWS) It's important to recognize caveats in the data, like incomplete coverage, observer bias, annual shifts in breeding seasonality, etc. Any user needs to realize that data is not an absolute count, but rather an estimation of breeding bird use over time. Collaborators include Audubon, Universities, Fed agencies, volunteers, non-profits

Bird Data Must fill out written request, send in, wait for data http://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/wild/wildlif e_diversity/tcws/

Fish data TEXAS PARKS AND WILDLIFE DEPARTMENT (TPWD)Coastal Fisheries Division Resource Monitoring Program Collected as a stratified cluster sampling design Include every organism encountered at that location as part of the sample Sample locations are drawn independently and without replacement for each combination of gear, stratum, and month (season) Ten major estuarine systems and five Gulf areas within the Texas Territorial Sea

Fish Data 1976-current Request from TPWD, comes in 5 separate CSV files for each year Includes water temp, DO, salinity, turbidity Records include over 1200 species First 20 of every species for each catch own record, includes length. After that 1 record with count of remaining # of that species caught SQL db with over 8 million records in main table plus separate tables for area names, species names, gear names, etc/

Water quality data The Texas Clean Rivers Program TCEQ http://www80.tceq.texas.gov/SwqmisWeb/pu blic/crpweb.faces http://www80.tceq.texas.gov/SwqmisWeb/pu blic/crpweb.faces Download by basin (25 basins in TX)

Water quality data Data from 1968-present ~11 million records from over 9k stations measuring over 4800 parameters

TX Coast 18 counties 10 Major Bays

Serving data ArcGIS for Server Hybrid solution, leverage existing capabilities, re-use in other AGOL applications http://esri.github.io/esri-leaflet/

Technologies used

Other things used Audubon field guide and Getty embed images

Ease of leaflet

Wrap-up Leaflet is awesome! Lightweight, flexible, easy to integrate with other libraries. Mapbox maps are beautiful! Responsive design Thanks to bootstrap- 1 app, multiple platforms

Live demonstration http://www.harcresearch.org/TXCRV (still a WIP) Texas Coastal Resources Viewer

HARCresearch.org HARC (härk), n. an independent research hub helping people thrive and nature flourish. Brad Neish bneish@harcresearch.org
