Filipa Roldão – ongoing research The Portuguese presence in Cochim and in Macau at the end of the 16 th century is marked by the attribution to these cities of a municipal legal model, brought from the Portuguese Iberian territory, which consisted in the Charter and privileges of the city of Évora. This project seeks to reflect on the survival and adjustment of the municipal experience – as structuring dimension and identity of the Kingdom of Portugal in the medieval period – in the Portuguese overseas expansion, especially in the case of Macau, considering local contexts of government. The study of the documentation produced by the municipal institutions of this city will achieve this objective. The ongoing research is in line with studies initiated by Charles Boxer in his work Portuguese Society in the tropics. The municipal councils of Goa, Macao, Bahia and Luanda 1510-1800 (1965) and continued recently by Liam Matthew Brockey, among others, on the study of municipal administration in overseas Portuguese cities.
