WARM UP 1. What happens when you create a circuit with a battery, a wire and no resistor? 2. What are domains and how do they relate to magnetism? 3. When you are graphing data, what is an independent variable and a dependent variable? 4. What kind of current does the electric company provide? 5. What is a solenoid?

WARM UP What happens when you create a circuit with a battery, a wire and no resistor? The energy quickly drains from the battery. The wire gets hot.

What are domains and how do they relate to magnetism? When the domains of a material are aligned, the material is magnetic.

WARM UP When you are graphing data, what is an independent variable and a dependent variable? The independent variable is the data that is not changed by the other data you are measuring. It is the input. It is on the x axis. The dependent variable changes as the independent variable changes. It is the output. It is on the y axis.

What kind of current does the electric company provide? Alternating current (AC)

What is a solenoid? A wire wrapped into a tight coil

ELECTROMAGNETISM LAB Work in pairs or individually. Each person will turn a lab sheet with the data tables filled in and a graph of your data. Wear safety glasses.

The compass needle spun around because there is a magnetic field around an electric current.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Explain how running an electric current through a wire wrapped around an iron nail makes the nail into a magnet. The magnetic field around the current aligns the domains in the iron nail.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS How many paper clips could my electromagnet pick up if I wrapped my nail with three coils. Fewer—(Probably none) How many paper clips could my electromagnet pick up if I wrapped my nail with 10,000 coils? More—(Probably a lot)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS How many paper clips could my electromagnet pick up if I added another battery. More How many paper clips could my electromagnet pick up if I changed the battery to one with less voltage? Fewer

ELECTRICITY FROM MAGNETISM--VIDEO

Is copper magnetic? No What did Faraday build the first of? An electric generator What were the parts of his generator? Coil of wire and a magnet

What does the magnetic field have to be doing to generate electricity? Changing What slowed the magnet down as it fell through the copper pipe. A changing magnetic field generates an electric current which generates an opposing magnetic field which slows the magnet down.

How did he get the LED to light up? By passing a magnet back and forth (creating a changing magnetic field) through a coil of wire. This created an electric current which lit the LED. What is electromagnetic induction? Move a magnet near a conductor and it creates electric current

VIDEO: HOW GEORGIA POWER MAKES ELECTRICITY

What do you think the relationship is between electricity and magnetism? They are interrelated aspects of the electromagnetic force. Like two sides of the same coin.

EXIT TICKET If you were writing a newspaper article about today’s lesson, what would the headline be?
