5 Fashion Defined Section 1.1 In the apparel industry, fashion is the existing type of clothing that is preferred by a large segment of the public. To many people, fashion is a current trend that is popular for frivolous reasons. To some people, fashion is a precise style of dress or behavior that is acceptable in one year, but not in another. To retailers, fashion is whatever is currently selling. To sociologists, fashion represents a way of social interaction and status seeking. Definitions of Fashion 5

Tint is a lighter version of the color. Shade is a darker version of the color. Intensity—the brightness or dullness of a color. The material often affects the intensity.

12 What Is Fashion? 12 Tint vs. Shade This dress is considered a shade of purple called eggplant. This dress is considered to be a tint of purple called lilac. It is important to understand that colors may have many shades or tints.

In fashion, designers use straight, curved, or diagonal lines either as structural or decorative elements to achieve this. Shape, or silhouette, is the overall form or outline of a garment. There are three basic shapes in fashion: straight, bell-shaped, and bustle shaped. Section 1.1

Some different terms to describe texture are smooth, rough, shiny, dull, shaggy, scratchy, etc. Function refers to the intended use or purpose of an object. Fashion is expected to function in various ways, including to beautify, to adorn, to express, to indentify, and even to protect. Function is often considered the 5 th element of design.

Fashion serves as a historical record of culture and lifestyle. Fashion is said to be a “mirror of our times.” At every level of society, people care about appearance as it affects self-esteem and their interactions with others. Section 1.1
