15 Screen and Intake 3-6 weeks prior to orientation Application (handout) Interview process  All program staff should be involved  Explain stipends, program overview  Half hour in length  The director, program manager, or one or two staff conducts each interview

16 Purpose of the Interviews To learn if the applicant is motivated to: Improve educationally Learn construction skills Do hard, physical work Stay with a job for a long period of time Show up all the time Get along with peers Deal with personal problems so that he or she can succeed Take on leadership role in the program or community

17 Screen and Intake Rating applicants on a scale of 1 to 5 on:  motivation to improve educationally  interest in learning construction skills  do hard, physical work  show up on time  get along with peers  ability to deal with personal issues  interest in leadership
