What is Blended Learning?  blended in blended-learning speaks to the mixing of the traditional face-to-face mode of pedagogy with online, through- the-web pedagogy where instructor and students are typically separated geographically.  NUC restrictions force us to adopt this terminology Online maybe synchronous (with learner and instructor connected live via video or voice) or asynchronous where the 2 are separated in time: e.g. email, message boards or posting of material (lectures, activities, grades etc by instructors and completed activities by students).

Workshop Goals (LOs?)  gain an appreciation for the shifting landscape of pedagogy from instructor-led to learner-centered learning  appreciate the role of technology (internet & web) as a repository for rich and massive content and a platform/vehicle to support and facilitate learning  embrace the AUN approach to pedagogy (Prof Dave Merrill’s E3 approach) and our LMS support technology (Canvas & related tools) in your course design (or re- design), content/ activity creation, and your management of student learning -- including continuous assessment and feedback on your learning  commit to investing the necessary upfront time and effort for planning and re-designing your course content and activities to promote the learner centered approach to pedagogy  identify key resources (colleagues, available training and support tools) to leverage  gain sufficient motivation to effect the changes needed in this paradigm shift  appreciate & support OIRE in working with us to improve our process

Key Areas of Emphasis  Our philosophy on blended learning – our emphasis and unifying theme is that of learner-centered/directed pedagogy rather than instructor-led which is the norm  Learning Outcomes & activity-centered pedagogy: we emphasize both of these. We have a set of AUN-wide LOs that we every faculty should reference and try to factor into their course specific LOs  Dr Merrill’s problem-centered E3 approach – our approach of choice we believe best supports learner-centered learning. AUN is paying Prof Merrill to continue mentoring us on his method, albeit online – open to registration by faculty. His book that elaborates his problem- centered E3 approach is available via the AUN bookstore to faculty. He has also provided a number of online videos that summarize the method very well. NB: Prof Merrill has been an under-utilized resource, so please try and work with him to improve your pedagogy and be within our guidelines

Key Areas of Emphasis (cont’d)  The roles/responsibilities of the instructor in the learning process: Developer/creator of LOs, content, activities, examples, simulations, application scenarios and problems ala Prof Merrill approach Planner – identify resources including freely available ones online, set an agenda for the time duration available (See pdf_course design template) Designer – use Pdf course design template Mentor/Advisor – provide them learning tips and strategies Examiner/Reviewer: provide continuous assessment and feedback on their work via Canvas  Canvas Support capabilities: for planning, implementing and managing the learning process & for tracking the overall performance of the learner-directed method to blended learning  Our expectations & standards for a learner-centered pedagogy – Ferdinand will elaborate on these and later show us a sample course of his developed to meet these.

Support Resources for Faculty  Prof Dave Merril’s online course, Book & video clips  Point persons (faculty colleagues) – Alexey Vedishchev, Evgeny Arkhipov, Ferdinand Che, Andrei Dragunov, Martin Burt, Lynne Baker, ++  Canvas course on Canvas! (course design templates, Canvas tutorials, e-resources on online learning & best practices, My Past workshop presentation: Online Learning and Canvas)  Canvas HelpDesk (OTS staff – Nasiru & Team)
