7 CHALLENGES FOR THE NHS 1997-2010 years of maximum growth in the NHS Now facing unprecedented financial austerity - £30 billion reduction and beyond Increasing efficiency, reducing costs and maintaining quality Focus on Patient safety and quality- (post Francis report in England)

8 NHS CHANGES Health and Social Care Act – redesign of NHS Split into Commissioners and Providers (Buyers and Sellers) NHS England Outcomes Framework with 5 Domains Four Regions in England Commissioning support offices Commissioners – those that assess need and purchase services on behalf of their populations- previously Primary Care Trusts Clinical Commissioning Groups –GPs, Nurse, Acute Consultant HWBs- Joint Strategic Needs Assessments and all partners designing provision across health and local authority

9 NHS Changes in Scotland/NI/Wales Scotland: Public Bodies (Joint Working) Act brings in joint health / local government boards. No compulsory redundancies buts still efficiency savings Wales: NHS has had no England-style reforms – but budgetary and performance pressures Northern Ireland: biggest changes and challenges are around Special Educational Needs

10 PROVIDERS of NHS SERVICES Any provider of services that has met defined criteria Examples – Foundation Trusts –hospitals- mental health- community Social Enterprise Voluntary sector- charities Private providers- Assura etc AQP – Any Qualified Provider

11 Why is this Important? Majority of S&LTs employed by NHS Organisations will differ in what they are looking for Contracts of employment will differ Flexibility increasing- Short term

12 How will this affect employment? Short term contracts More part time/flexible contracts Portfolio careers Jobs for life a thing of the past! Tailor your offer to the business of employer
