5. Indiana’s 21st Century Scholars is a needs- and performance-based program that provides students the opportunity to earn up to a four- year scholarship at an Indiana college or university. Hoosier students who meet income criteria can enroll during their 7th- or 8th-grade year of middle school. Students commit to maintaining academic success, remaining drug and alcohol free, and completing college-preparation activities. Scholars are provided resources and assistance to help them plan and prepare for college and pay for expenses not covered by their scholarship.

Not use illegal drugs, commit a crime or delinquent act, or consume alcohol before reaching the legal drinking age. 9

Scholarship Activation After graduating from High School, in order to activate their 21 st Century Scholarship, a student must: Enroll as a full-time student within one year of graduating from high school. Make sure the college they are attending is listed as their top choice on the FAFSA and through eStudent. Maintain Indiana Residency 23

Students in the military who miss this window can appeal to have Scholarship activated as long as they’ve met all other requirements. 24

Maintain Indiana Residency In order to receive state financial aid, including the 21st Century Scholarship, a Scholar and the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) listed on his or her FAFSA must maintain Indiana residency. To receive aid in the coming academic year, the Scholar and parent must be Indiana residents as of December 31, 2015 and remain so throughout the 2016-2017 academic year. 26

36. Credit Completion Requirement For state-aid recipients who first entered college in the fall of 2013 and afterward, the state enacted new credit completion requirements. Instead of providing aid based on credits attempted—the new completion requirements base aid on credits completed. The goal is to provide students with an incentive to graduate on-time, reducing borrowing and increasing future earnings. 36

37. 21 st Century Scholarship – Credit Completion Requirements and SAP Students must have 30 completed college credits by end of first year in college, 60 by the end of second year, and 90 by the end of third year to remain eligible for full Scholarship. Any course in which the student passes counts as a completed course. College credits earned in high school count toward the completion credits. 37

38. 21 st Century Scholarship – Credit Completion Requirements and SAP Up to 12 credits of remedial coursework counts toward completion credits IF taken in first year. Scholars who don’t meet completion credits can get Scholarship back if they catch up during the end of the following year. Frank O’Bannon Credit Completion Requirements Award reduced approximately $500 for students earning between 24 and 29 credits per year (full-time award) Students earning 30 credits per year receive on-time award Students graduating from high school with academic honors will receive an $800 bonus (first year only) Accelerated Schedule. Students who complete at least 39 credits per year will receive $1,300 bonus. 39
