Like the use of tobacco and alcohol, drug use imposes economic costs on society. Billions of dollars are spent in the U.S. each year on health care resulting from drug abuse. There are also costs from lost productivity at work, accidents, suicide, and other drug- related problems. Addiction is a condition in which a person can no longer control his or her drug use. Most drugs of abuse activate the brain reward system, which releases chemicals that give pleasure. The pleasure that these drugs produce trick the body into thinking the drug is good for you. People who become addicts usually start by experimenting, then more regular use leads to a series of changes on the path to addiction. ©2016NorthsideISD(SanAntonio,TX ) Video
