New year, new you, new class Update your Table of Contents before starting! 1.List one thing you plan to improve on this quarter that you struggled with last quarter 2.Write a promise to yourself for Quarter 3 and an action plan Example: I promise to only miss two homework assignments this whole quarter by always updating and checking my agenda

2 Materials Update Update your notebook so you can earn full credit on your notebook checks each quarter. -Table of Contents updated daily -Each page numbered -EVERYTHING glued or taped in (pack some glue or tape into your backpack tonight and keep it there) -Glossary updated from the word wall each week

3 Digestive System Objective: SWBAT recall the major organs and functions of the digestive system.

4 Directions As we go through each organ of the digestive system, label it on your human body systems handout. Copy what is in red into your notebook on the next page Update Table of Contents!

5 The Digestive System Functions: Mechanical and chemical breakdown of food Absorption of nutrients Eliminates solid waste

6 Mouth

7 Breaks down food into smaller pieces through mechanical digestion. Teeth: breaks food into smaller pieces Tongue: skeletal muscle, mixes food with saliva Saliva in the mouth starts the process of chemical digestion. Salvia contains amylase- enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates

8 Esophagus

9 Muscular tubes that carry chewed food to the stomach No digestion occurs here Esophagus is NOT your windpipe!

10 Stomach

11 Receives food from esophagus and continues the process of mechanical digestion Also secretes gastric juices which continue the process of chemical digestion The main enzyme in gastric juice is pepsin which digests protein Chyme- product of food mixing with gastric juice, sent to small intestine

13 Most of the chemical digestion occurs here Receives secretions from pancreas and liver to aide in digestion of chyme from stomach Absorbs nutrients 20 feet long

14 Large Intestine Rectum Anus

15 Large Intestine Absorbs water from food that gets taken to the bloodstream Forms and stores feces 5 feet long Rectum: temporary storage for solid waste at end of large intestine Anus: opening at end of large intestine through which waste is eliminated.

17 How Does It Move? Peristalsis, involuntary movements of muscles in the digestive tract that occur in progressive wavelike contractions. Peristaltic waves occur in the esophagus, stomach, and intestines

21 Digestive System Activity You will become a part of the digestive system and act out your part in the digestion of our food particle. Find your role below and see what your task is before we begin:  Molars – mechanical digestion by tearing food apart (rip plastic bag)  Saliva – chemical digestion (spray food particle)  Pancreatic Juices – chemical digestion (spray food particle)  Small Intestine – absorbs nutrients (finds plastic bags of candy and passes to the blood)  Blood – transports nutrients to rest of body (gives plastic bags of candy to body students)  Large Intestine – reabsorbs moisture (sponges up water on the floor)  Rectum – eliminates waste (puts waste paper in the trash can)

23 Digestive System Activity As the food particle reaches you, you will narrate your job as you are doing it. We will do a dry run through first so you can practice what you will say. – Ex: “My role is a molar.
