Example Topic: Building a Soup Kitchen in Zion HOW TO RESEARCH

First you need to outline your proposal (Research Outline) Thesis Body paragraph 1 Body paragraph 2

A soup kitchen would provide a great advantage to the Zion community. Make sure your thesis clearly addresses the prompt: Prompt: Identify a resource that you believe would be advantageous to the Zion community or ZBTHS.

Don’t forget: each paragraph must use ethos, pathos, and logos to support your argument.

A soup kitchen would provide a great advantage to the Zion community. Advantage to those using the soup kitchen Advantage to those volunteering at the soup kitchen Without soup kitchens, many community members will go hungry Fact that proves Zion community needs a soup kitchen Credible person/company supporting volunteering at soup kitchens or in general Soup kitchen = chance for community members to make a difference and feel good about themselves Fact about the benefits of volunteering at a soup kitchen Credible person/company supporting soup kitchens This step tells you what information to look for when you research. Think of what information you could search for that would help you use ethos, pathos, and logos in your speech.

A soup kitchen would provide a great advantage to the Zion community. Notice: Outlining your argument doesn’t mean you have all the information. It just means you know what information you will look for when you research.

Second you need to research your proposal (Research Organizer) Since you are not an expert on your topic… Any information you use that is NOT common knowledge must be cited! Create a Works Cited as you research. Create citations for your information as you research. The Research Organizer is where you will put in the information you find to back up the points in your outline.

Let’s practice researching by looking for one of the facts we need:

Using an IMC database guarantees that the source you find is credible. Go to the IMC database of your choice

Try different combinations of keywords until you find what you are looking for This part of research can take a while. Your first search might not pull up what you are looking for. That is why it’s called “re- search”!

Click on an article that fits with your topic

Look for part of the article that you can apply to the needs of Zion or ZBTHS This section explains that soup kitchens are especially needed in suburbs. Since Zion is a suburb of Chicago, we can easily use this information to prove Zion’s need for a soup kitchen.

Here’s what our new information will look like on our research organizer: As a suburb, the city of Zion is especially in need of a soup kitchen: “America’s Second Harvest, which helps supply soup kitchens nationwide, estimates that one-third of the 23 million people it serves live in suburbs” (Sappenfield). Include the author’s last name + page # (if available) If no author’s name is given, put the first part of the article name in quotes – Example: “America’s Second Harvest, which helps supply soup kitchens nationwide, estimates that one-third of the 23 million people it serves live in suburbs” (“Cul-de-sacs”).

As a suburb, the city of Zion is especially in need of a soup kitchen: “America’s Second Harvest, which helps supply soup kitchens nationwide, estimates that one- third of the 23 million people it serves live in suburbs” (Sappenfield). Here is what this piece of information will look like on your research organizer. Introduction to evidence (in your own words) Information (quote) Citation

Now we need to keep track of where we found this information on our Works Cited. ●A works cited is where you will keep track of the sources you use to complete your research. ●MLA format requires that the information about your sources be in a certain format.

You can either use Noodletools to format your Works Cited for you or you can create it yourself on a Microsoft Word document. Let’s practice making a citation for our example using Noodletools! Go to the Purdue OWL (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/) if you want to create the Works Cited on your own.https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/

Go to noodletools.com and click on “sign in” Click Here

You should be able to log in with your ID # and a password you created Type in your ID and password

If you are NOT able to log in, click on “Create a Personal ID” Click here

Create a new account - write down your U/N and password somewhere safe Click here zion benton Click here

Once you are logged in, click on “Create a New Project”

Select the following... Persuasive Speech Works Cited

Click on “Works Cited”

Selection a citation type. Most likely if you are going through the IMC databases, you should select “database.”

Since we found our example fact on ProQuest, we will select “Database.”

What type of source did you locate on the IMC database? In the case of our example, The Christian Science Monitor is a Newspaper.

Enter in as much information from your source as you can.

When all of your sources are on your works cited, click “print/export” and export to Google Docs or Microsoft Word.

This is how your source will look in the final version of your Works Cited.

Helpful Hints Keep track of where you find your information AS YOU RESEARCH Update your Works Cited as you put together your research – DON’T wait until you write your speech Remember: Only use CREDIBLE, trustworthy websites (Hint: All IMC databases are trustworthy!)
