Modeling the Distributive Property MAFS.3.OA.2.5

Lesson Opening Using square tiles, make an array to find the product of 6 × 6.

Lesson Opening Using square tiles, make an array to find the product of 5 × 6.

This is a lot of tiles to count! I am going to break apart my array and use multiplication facts I know to find the product of 5 × 6.

This is a lot of tiles to count! Did I take away any tiles?

Now I am going to use multiplication to find my product. 5 x 3 The original array: 5 x 6 15 + 15 = 30 So, 5 x 6 must equal 30.

Let’s build another array. Build it on your dry-erase board. 4 x 7

Let’s break apart our array. 4 x 7

Without taking any tiles away, I now have two arrays. 4 x 7 4 x 3 4 x 4 12 + 16 = 28 So, 4 x 7 must equal 28.

Let’s build another array. Build it on your dry-erase board. 9 x 4

Let’s build another array. Build it on your dry-erase board. 9 x 4 Break apart your array into 2 pieces at a row or a column.

Let’s build another array. Build it on your dry-erase board. 9 x 4 Write the multiplication equation next to each array.

Let’s build another array. Build it on your dry-erase board. 9 x 4 Add the products from each array. Did you get 36, too?

How did you break apart your 9 x 4 array? 9 x 2 = 18 9 x 2 = 18 18 + 18 = 36 7 x 4 = 28 2 x 4 = 8 28 + 8 = 36 6 x 4 = 24 3 x 4 = 12 24 + 12 = 36 9 x 3 = 27 9 x 1 = 9 27 + 9 = 36

Your Turn Using grid paper, cut out 2 of the SAME array. Color the arrays to show how you are breaking it apart. Then cut one of the arrays between the two colors. Glue the arrays onto construction paper. Label each array with the multiplication expression. Label underneath each array with the product. Repeat this process for 4 more arrays.

BONUS QUESTION If the arrays below were combined, what multiplication equation would it create?

BONUS QUESTION If the arrays below were combined, what multiplication equation would it create?

Exit Ticket Break apart the array into 2 smaller arrays. Write the multiplication expressions for the larger array and 2 smaller arrays.
