Everyday Stuff

Instructions You will be shown different slides. On your own sheet of paper, write the item and then whether you think it is a physical or chemical change. Think about why you decided on your answer and be ready to discuss when we go over them.

Frying Eggs

Toast

Cracking Eggs

Slicing bread

Lighting a Match

Roasting Marshmallows

Rusty Nails

Melting Ice

Glass Breaking

Boiling Water

Fresh Lemonade

Baking a Cake

Fireworks

Digesting Food

Mowing the Lawn

Physical Changes  Most matter can undergo physical changes  Physical change is any change in size, shape, form, or state of matter  The identity of the matter stays the same only the physical properties change.  Most physical changes are reversible  Real Life Example: Cutting a watermelon into pieces is a physical change. The watermelon has changed in size and shape.  Give me some examples of physical change

Chemical Change  Chemical change is when one type of matter changes into another type of matter with different properties  Most chemical changes are irreversible because totally new substances are formed  Real Life Examples: Apple turning brown from leaving it out, leaf changing color in the fall, food that we eat being changed so that our body can use and absorb the nutrients.

Signs of Chemical Change  Release or absorption of energy in the form of light, heat, or sound  Formation of a gas after a chemical reaction  Formation of a precipitate (solid) after a chemical reaction  Often, a change in color. Can you think of exceptions to this one? Give me an example.  Give me some examples of chemical change

Contrasting Properties and Changes  Physical and chemical properties help identify the matter. Example: Density, mass, volume  Physical and chemical changes is when the matter changes. Example: condensation, evaporation, rusting.

Answers  Frying Eggs- Chemical  Toast- Chemical  Cracking eggs- Physical  Slicing Bread- Physical  Lighting Match- Chemical  Roasting Marshmallows- Chemical  Rusty Nails- Chemical  Melting Ice- Physical  Glass Breaking- Physical  Boiling Water- Physical  Fresh Lemonade- Physical  Baking a Cake- Chemical  Fireworks- Chemical  Digesting Food- Chemical  Mowing the Lawn- Physical
