2 What is a Laser? Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation A device that produces light of a single colour with all waves travelling parallel to each other Since it is a single color it is a single wavelength You'll find them in everything from CD players to dental drills to high-speed metal cutting mac­hines to measuring systems. Tattoo removal, hair replacement, eye surgery

5 Amplification of photons – Some of the photons reflect off of mirrors at the ends of the rod, and then collide with atoms, which releases more photons.

7 PROPERTIES OF LASERS Laser light is monochromatic or very pure in color. Laser light is coherent or special "in-phase" light Coherent mean in same fixed phase and frequency, so the waves vibrate in the same direction at the same time — a laser beam can transfer a great quantity of energy as quanta.

8 TYPES OF LASERS There are 4 types of lasers: -Depending on the beams power Class 1: Safe Ex. laser pointers, laser printers and disc players Class 4 : More Harmful Ex. Medical lasers, to powerful industrial lasers

9 How is laser light different from visible light?  Laser light is coherent, while light Is incoherent and consists of multiple wavelengths  Since it only one wavelength it only has one specific color compared to how light has many different colors.  Laser light is directional. Whereas a laser generates a very tight beam, a flashlight produces light that is diffuse. Because laser light is coherent, it stays focused for vast distances. This proves that laser light has more energy.
