This is called a saliva ejector. Also known as “suction”. It has a small tip and is used to remove a small amount of water or saliva during dental treatments.

This is a large suction tip. This tip is used for many dental procedures because the large, open-ended tip allows it to powerfully suction water and saliva during your treatment.

This is a surgical suction tip. This suction tip has a very small opening that allows the dental assistant to keep the area clean and free from blood so that the dentist has a clear view of the area being treated.

These small square pieces of cotton gauze are called 2x2s. They are used a lot in the field of dentistry. The 2x2s allow areas of the mouth to be kept isolated and dry. They are also used after extractions for the patient to bite down on.

Cotton rolls are also used a lot in dental offices. They allow the dentist or assistant to easily dry a tooth. Cotton rolls can be placed between the tongue and teeth, and between the cheek and teeth to allow an area to remain isolated and dry.

When you are in the dental chair, this syringe may look like a needle out of the corner of your eye. It's not. It's simply a plastic syringe that the dentist uses to flush out or "irrigate" an area in the mouth or teeth.

This is a cord packer and simply allows the dentist to place retraction cord snugly in between the tooth and gum tissue.

This instrument is called a hemostat. It simply acts as another set of fingers for the dentist. The small tips allow for easy pick up and placement of small items

Acting similar to a lever, this surgical instrument is called a small elevator. This instrument allows the dentist to loosen the tooth prior to removing it with forceps. The patient should only feel a small amount of pressure during this procedure.

These surgical instruments are called root tip elevators. They act similar to levers and allow the dentist to loosen up any root tips prior to removing them with forceps.

These are surgical forceps. They are used mostly to remove lower molars. There are different types of forceps this is just one type.

 A mouth mirror enables the dentist and hygienist to see all sides of the teeth and all areas of the mouth.

 An explorer is NOT used to poke your gums. The dentist and hygienist use an explorer to feel your teeth, to see if there are any sticky spots that could be decay, check to see if fillings are leaking, count teeth and check the margins of crowns.

 During a long procedure, a bite block helps the patient to keep their mouth open.
