+ Measurements and Units Using Measurements, Part 1

Learning Goals After completing the activities in this slideshow lecture you should be able to… 1. Identify inches, millimeters, centimeters, picas, points, and weights on a typesetters ruler 2. Use a ruler to identify fractions of a INCH 3. Use a ruler to identify segment lengths 4. Use a ruler to draw segments based on a given measurement Measurements and Units

What is a Typesetters Ruler? What is a Typesetter’s Ruler? Rulers come in all shapes and sizes. Some are used by construction workers, some by elementary school children, and others are used by graphic arts professionals, etc… Each ruler has a set of measurements (often times more than one set) that are specific to the need of the user. A typesetter’s ruler, or an e-gauge, is a ruler designed to be used by graphic arts professionals. It may include inches, centimeters, picas, points, weights, & line screen and greyscale values.

What is a Typesetters Ruler? What is a Typesetter’s Ruler? A typesetter’s ruler, or an e-gauge, comes in may different shapes and sizes. Transparent rulers are much easier to use than opaque since the ruler can be placed directly over the type or line, etc… that are are trying to measure. If you choose to use an opaque ruler you must understand that measurements are going to be harder to capture (but not impossible). Most typesetters rulers do not come with corked backs. So, for this reason, it is a good idea not use use a medium that bleeds or smears (like a wet ink pen or a marker).

Identifying Measurements Inches Leading Weight Points Picas E-Gauge Take a minute to identify these measurements on your ruler. If your ruler doesn’t look like this one, identify which units you have.

What are Inches? “An inch is the name of a unit of length in a number of different [measurement] systems, including Imperial Units, and United States Customary Units. There are 36 inches in a yard and 12 inches in a foot. Corresponding units of area and volume are the square inch and the cubic inch.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inches

Identifying Inches Inches (and other measurements for that matter) are most often referred to as portions of a whole number. This is why it is extremely important to be able to: 1. Identify portions of an inch (fractions) on a ruler and 2. Be able to convert them to decimals for frequent use. Common Decimals *Divide the numerator by the denominator to convert any fraction into a decimal.

Identifying Inches This is a blown-up version of a standard ruler. There are lots of different lines, usually of varying lengths, that indicate where ½” ¼” etc… are located.

Identifying Inches The orange lines in this diagram indicate WHOLE INCHES. WHOLE INCHES Please take a minute to identify these on your ruler.

Identifying Inches HALF INCHES The orange lines in this diagram indicate HALF INCHES (½). 1/22/23/24/2 Please take a minute to identify these on your ruler.

Identifying Inches QUARTER INCHES The orange lines in this diagram indicate QUARTER INCHES (¼). 1/43/45/47/42/44/46/49/48/4 Please take a minute to identify these on your ruler.

Identifying Inches EIGHTH INCHES The orange lines in this diagram indicate EIGHTH INCHES (1/8). 1/85/89/813/83/87/811/817/815/8 Please take a minute to identify these on your ruler.

Identifying Inches SIXTEENTH INCHES The orange lines in this diagram indicate SIXTEENTH INCHES (1/16). 1/169/1617/1625/165/1613/1621/1633/1629/16 Please take a minute to identify these on your ruler.

Identifying Inches Steps for Identifying Fractions of an Inch: 1. Identify the level at which you are measuring ( ½, ¼, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32). 2. Count the bars in your level from left to right (Do not count the very first bar. It indicates 0”). To identify the measurement for this red bar we must first identify that it falls on the 16 th set of marks and then count every 16 th bar left to right until we get to it.

Converting Fractions to Decimals The first step to being able to work properly with a ruler is to be able to identify fractions on your ruler. The second step is to be able to convert those fractions into decimals for quick calculations. Divide the numerator by the denominator to convert any fraction into a decimal. 1/16 in = 1 ÷ 16 =.0625 in Common Decimals

Converting Fractions to Decimals Do not move on to the next slide until you have attempted these six problems. Practice Converting Fractions to Decimals: Convert the following ruler measurements to decimals. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Converting Fractions to Decimals Practice Converting Fractions to Decimals: Convert the following ruler measurements to decimals. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 9/16 in =.5625 in ¾ in =.75 in1 and 7/8 = 1.875 in15/16 in =.9375in 1 and 1/8 = 1.125 in3/8 in =.375 in

Measuring Segments Print the attached handout (Measuring Segments) to practice using a ruler to measure segments. This document must be printed at 100% without any scaling. DO NOT REDUCE THE SIZE OF THE IMAGE WHEN YOU PRINT IT. Once you have completed this worksheet, enter your answers as fractions on the the Canvas homework assignment HW: Layouts for Packaging

Drawing Segments Print the attached handout (Drawing Segments) to practice drawing segments using a ruler. This document must be printed at 100% without any scaling. DO NOT REDUCE THE SIZE OF THE IMAGE WHEN YOU PRINT IT. Submit this handout in person or scan it at 100% size and submit to receive extra credit. THIS IS AN OPTIONAL ASSIGNMENT.
