Facts about the Colossus Of Rhodes The colossus of Rhodes is a huge bronze statue which is the “son of the god Helios.” The city had strong economic foundation. It was on the Island of Rhodes. It was built by Charles of Lindos. Built between 292 B.C. and 280 B.C. It is similar in size to the Statue of Liberty. The Colossus of Rhodes is one of the ancient wonders of the world.

Location The Colossus of Rhodes is located in Greece. Rhodes is a large island off the southern coast of Asia Minor. It's on the small island of Rhodes. Colossus of Rhodes is next to the Mediterranean Sea.

History In 305 B.C., the island was invaded and the capital city, also the Colossus of Rhodes, was placed under siege. The citizens of Rhodes fought so bravely to defend the Colossus of Rhodes. Eventually their enemy retreated and left the island, leaving behind all of their military equipment.

Why were the Hanging Gardens of Babylon Built? A gift from the King Nebuchadnezzar II to his wife, Amytis. Amytis was a Persian princess. He built it for her and his other concubine. There are exotic plants and animals to please the ladies. Today it is a private park with large trees.

Description Built in 600 B.C. from mostly sun-dried bricks. It had bubbling streams, fountains and exotic plants. It was built high off the ground with palace walls and terraces. It had 14 stone chambers It looked like mountain scenery, which is important because Amytis longed for the cool wooded mountain of her childhood. Inside there were statues of solid gold. There are exotic plants and animals

Location It’s on the east bank of the Euphrates River, 50 kilometers south of modern Baghad, Iraq. It is 600 miles from the Mediterranean Ocean.

History of the Great Pyramid of Giza It was built in 2550 B.C. It was built for Pharaoh Khufu’s tomb. It is the biggest and the oldest pyramid in the world. It was the first pyramid ever made. It was built for overlooking the Ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis.

How Was it Constructed? It took one hundred thousand men and twenty years to build the great pyramid. It took 10 years in planning the project, preparing the site, building the roads, quarrying stones, and constructing quarters for the workmen. It took 25 men to transfer 1.5-ton stone block. They got the stones from the Nile River. It took them 20 years to build it, and slaves worked 10 hours a day every day.

Description The pyramid was 481 ft high. Sloping angle of its side is 51 degrees. Maximum error between side lengths is less than 0.1%. Took 2 million blocks of stones, each weighing 2 tons, to build the great pyramid. The pyramid’s entrance is on the north face of the structure.

Why Is It One Of The World’s Greatest Wonders? It is the biggest pyramid ever made. There are secret passage ways inside. It was the tallest pyramid for more than 43 centuries. The smallest pyramid was built for the Queen Hetepheres.

Zeus The Thunderer Zeus is the head of the Olympians. It’s also the God of Humans, other Gods and Goddesses. In the year of 456 B.C. a beautiful, new gleaming, white stone temple made by Phidias of Athens, was dedicated to Zeus. It was the greatest sculpture of the age.

Description of the Temple A Greek writer of the 2 nd century A.D. named Pausanias wrote a description of the great temple: –It is made out of rare materials. –Beaten plates of solid gold and silver were used for his robe. –It stands more than 40 feet high.

What happened to it ? In the 4 th century A.D. Roman Emperor Theodosius I, a christian, had the great statue taken as a trophy to Constantinople. It was destroyed by fire, in A.D. 462. Because camera had not been invented yet, we don’t know exactly how it looks, but there are a lot of great paintings of the temple.

Facts about Paricutin It first erupted on February 20, 1943. It is located in San Juan, Mexico. It now stands 1,345 feet tall. When the volcano erupted it damaged nine villages, and turned a large area into wasteland. It is named after the village Paricutin, that it damaged,. Paricutin is the youngest volcano in Mexico.

Does anybody live in the Grand Canyon? Various Indian tribes have lived in the Grand Canyon for the last 4,000 years. About 300 species of birds are found in the Grand Canyon area. The area has about 120 other kinds of animals.

The Northern Lights are also called the Aurora. The Aurora Boreasis a natural display of a light in the sky that can be seen with the unaided eye at the night. It is the most visible effect of the sun’s activity on Earth’s atmosphere.

The Northern Lights Most Northern Lights occur in far Northern & Southern regions. Appear mostly as arcs, clouds & streaks. Some move, brighten or flicker. In the Southern Hemisphere is called the Aurora Australia. Aurora display in the Northern Hemisphere is called the Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights.
