2 COPY OBJECTIVE AND VOCABULARY(BE PREPARED TO DISCUSS) SWBAT understand and write the synopsis parts of a formal argument using “claim/warrant/impact”/”ARE-Assertion, Reasoning, Evidence” structures. Debate Argument Claim/assertion Warrant/reasoning Impact/evidence DO NOW (INDEPENDENTLY & SILENTLY)

3 There are only two sides in a competitive debate Offensive- in debate, a person/team is in support of the topic Defensive – in debate, a person/team not in support of the topic COMPETITIVE DEBATE

4  DEBATE – A discussion between two people that have different opinions about a particular topic.  Argument- a statement or series of statements for or against something.  Claim/Assertion- makes a statement of possible truth: a strongly stated opinion; Ex. Scholars should be required to wear uniforms at school.  Warrant/reasoning- a way in which causes people to think, decide, or act upon something in the way that they do; Ex. Uniforms in schools minimizes problems based on physical appearance of scholars.  Impact/Evidence- explains the importance of the claim of how the argument proves their position true or how the implication of the claim argument affects people; Ex. Gangs would not be able to infiltrate campuses with their colors, logos/emblems, or clothing paraphernalia, if scholars are required to wear uniforms. VOCABULARY
