Aim: How can we characterize Nurse Ratched response to McMurphy’s disturbance on the ward? Do Now: “Indifference to me, is the epitome of all evil.” – Elie Wiesel How does this quote connect to the novel? HW: Read to p. 175

“No. That’s not the truth. I lifted it myself.” p. 142 How does the Nurse try to undo McMurphy’s seeming victory when he receives 20 votes? What are Bromden and the other men in the ward doing in this moment? What has McMurphy become to the men of the ward? When did this happen?

“If somebody’d of come in and took a look, men watching a blank TV, a fifty year old woman hollering and squealing at the back of their heads about discipline and order and recriminations, they’d of thought the whole bunch as crazy as loons.” p. 145 Great last line! How did Bromden’s memory with his father foreshadow the events of the ward in this scene? P. 138 Given that the TV is blank, have the patients won? How so?

“Schizophrenic reaction?” “Latent Homosexual with Reaction Formation?” “Negative Oedipal.” With the various diagnosis suggested for McMurphy by the doctor, what is the author, Ken Kesey saying about the expertise of these doctors, of all doctors in charge of diagnosing the mind and the spirit?

“Keep in mind that Mr. McMurphy is committed. The length of time he spends in the hospital is entirely up to us. Now, if there is nothing else…” Why doesn’t Nurse Ratched agree to send McMurphy up to Disturbed? What is she trying to prevent? What does she think McMurphy will wear himself out? With this line of thinking, how does she see McMurphy? How can characterize this approach?
