3 3 Definition of POS Point Of Sale. The physical location at which goods are sold to customers Point Of Sale. The physical location of a transaction but usually refers to any device or system used to record the transaction for the retailer. CPOS: A computer-based POS which employs software to implement the POS functionality

4 Point-of-sale (POS) systems: retail computer systems that collect sales data and are hooked directly into the store’s inventory control system. POS systems deserve a special mention for how they have changed retailers’ operations since their adoption. Inventory re-ordering was done by walking around the store and looking for empty shelves, a slow and inefficient process! Scanners have changed everything, allowing for unprecedented control and quality of information. Definition of POS

9 Definition of E-Commerce E-Commerce or Electronic commerce is a process of buying, selling, transferring, or exchanging products, services, and/or information via electronic networks and computers

10 Brief History of E-Commerce 1970s E- commerce meant the facilitation of commercial transactions electronically, using technology such as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT), allowing businesses to send commercial documents like purchase orders or invoices electronically.

25 Interesting Facts and Statistics Every 0.2 seconds, a person makes a purchase with their PayPal account Almost 40 per cent of online shoppers make three or more online purchases per month (comScore 2015).

26 Interesting Facts and Statistics (cont..) Total retail sales for the first quarter of 2015 were estimated at $1,151.2 billion, a decrease of 1.5 percent (±0.2%) from the fourth quarter of 2014. The first quarter 2015 e-commerce estimate increased 14.5 percent (±1.9%) from the first quarter of 2014 while total retail sales increased 1.6 percent (±0.4%) in the same period. E-commerce sales in the first quarter of 2015 accounted for 7.0 percent of total sales.

27 Summary and Conclusion The Internet has lead to the birth and evolution E- commerce. E-commerce has now become a key component of many organizations in the daily running of their business. As the Internet and in turn E-commerce has developed, and continues to evolve and grow, it is vital that any organization, in any particular industry, must base its strategic planning around such a rapidly growing medium.
