Getting to Know You Activity Human Centipede Group Activity With the members of your group you must come up with things in your life that add to 100 Example: Ms Hahne has 1 dog – 1 niece + 1 cat + 2 cousins – 7 mile drive to work + 1 brother + 131 kids - 25 years old – 3 classes I teach = 100
5
We are diving right in…
6
Today I will be able to… Use the correct order of operations Combine Like Terms Translate verbal expressions to algebraic expressions and vice versa Evaluate expressions for given variables
7
Expressions In algebra we use expressions. An expression is just a mathematical phrase that can include numbers, variable, and operation symbols (+, -,, x). When we simplify expressions we have to use the correct order of operations.
8
Order of Operations Here is an acronym for you to remember the correct order of operations: PEMDAS P ___________________________________________________________ E ___________________________________________________________ MD _________________________________________________________ AS___________________________________________________________ Here is a sentence to help you remember the acronym: Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally
9
Using the correct order of operations is a four-step process: Step 1: Evaluate expressions inside grouping symbols first. Grouping symbols are: Parentheses ( ) Brackets [ ] Braces { } Fraction bars Step 2: Evaluate all exponents. Step 3: Do all multiplication and/or division from LEFT to RIGHT. Step 4: Do all addition and/or subtraction from LEFT to Right.

Evaluating Expressions Evaluate Substitute Simplify
38
There are two steps we take when we evaluate an algebraic expression. Step 1: Substitute a given number for each variable Step 2: Simplify the numerical expression using the order of operations
39
Example #8 Evaluate the given expression for a = 4 and b = 2
40
Example #9 Evaluate the given expression for a = 7 and b = 4
41
Example #10 Evaluate each expression for x = 10 and y = 5. 1. 2.
42
These two expressions look very similar. Do we get the same answer for both? Why or why not?
43
Example #11 1 Evaluate the following expressions for s = 11 and v = 8.
44
Example #11 2 Evaluate the following expressions for s = 11 and v = 8.

Journal Entry #1 1. What is one thing you like about math? 2. What is one thing you do not like about math? 3. How do you best learn math? 4. What would you like me to do this year to help you learn math? 5. Why do you think we need to learn math? 6. Is there anything I should know about that may effect your performance in math this year?
