4 METHODOLOGY The analysis has the goal of identify “winner” and “losers” In the competition in the Hungarian market. Parameters: imports in value years 2001/2003 Variables: - the trend (increase or decrease % in value) between 2001 and 2003 - the position (import share %) for each pre-selected country (27 + EU15 + Others)

7 COMMENTS ON IMPORTS OF YARNS AND FABRICS Total imports have increased +9,39%, and show a high concentration since only one country EU15 reaches over 75%. This share, combined with a positive trend slightly over the average qualifies the EU15 as a WINNER. The residual cluster of “Others” is the only LOSER. The Czech rep. and China are growing at a pace of about 40% in two years; despite that, its share is still minor and these countries are classified as INCREASING.

10 COMMENTS ON IMPORTS OF GARMENTS Total imports have increased significantly: +41,90%, Their concentration is low, 6 countries are needed to overcome 80%. The largest supplier is still the EU15 (33%) but it is a LOSER due to a negative growth trend (- 11,35%). The WINNERS are Romania and Hong Kong, China and Slovakia. Turkey, India and Bulgaria are INCREASING.

13 COMMENTS ON IMPORTS OF LEATHER Total imports have decreased : - 30%, Import concentration is very high due to the overwhelming share of EU15, the largest supplier, with 75 %. EU15 is classified as WINNER though its performance is heavely negative in terms of growth but slightly better than the average. The true WINNERS are China and Poland. Vietnam, India and Hong Kong are rapidly INCREASING.

16 COMMENTS ON IMPORTS OF SHOES Total imports have decreased : - 40%. Import concentration is rather low, and five countries make up 80% of total imports. Hong Kong (China?) is the WINNER. Also Romania and Vietnam are classified as WINNERS. LOSERS are EU15 (negative trend of 62%), and China (?). Turkey and Poland increasing at a fairly high pace.
