1 The Persian Army Aim: to understand what the Persian army was like and how it compared to Alexander's. Starter: Starter: Look at your copy of this image. What can we infer about the Persian army from this image? Label your image with your ideas.

3 A Vast and powerful army The resources of the Persian Empire were vast. Darius could call upon hundreds and thousands of soldiers to fight Alexander. By comparison, the Greek army was much smaller

4 A Strong Navy Since 480B.C. Persian kings had built a strong navy. This was to defend against who they saw as the main powers in Greece: Athens and Sparta. Was this a threat to Alexander?

5 Darius’ Army on Land The Persian army was similar in make up to the Macedonian Army. It had a variety of foot and mounted troops. It also aligned itself in a similar manner on the battle field. Where as the Macedonians use Phalagites, Persians used ‘immortals’

6 Immortal? On your sheet: Annotate and compare the Immortals and Phalangites. How would each fare in battle against the other?

7 Not just Immortals Like the Macedonians, the Persian Army was made up of different types of soldiers. From the information sheets, complete your chart. Extension: Extension: Rank the Persian units in order of effectiveness. Remember to indicate which are positives and negatives!!
