The Balance Needs of Student-IEP Needs of G.E. teachers SPED Program GLC, Admin.
32
Collaboration In order to support Special Education students in the General Education environment, and to provide additional support for General Education Teachers in whose classrooms Special Education students attend, a separate classroom is provided every period in the Special Education environment for test taking and assistance with classwork or homework.
33
Collaboration Most of students enrolled in G.E. receive testing supports that are generalized to support most students most of the time. ▫Supports are designed to fit with our teaching and Directed Study approach that asks student’s to do the bulk of the work leading into a test. Collaboration will be utilized for assistance using the following accommodations & modifications: Reduce Test Length / Selections Read Test Aloud Clarification/Rephrase Test Directions / Questions Alternative Assessments Student Generated Notes / Study Guides Calculator & Formula Cards / Math & Science
34
Collaboration A few students may need specific accommodations and modifications, per IEP- Consult Case Carrier. These “less common” supports are typically address unique needs or are high profile cases that require special attention.
35
Collaboration procedures: Envelope- all teachers given one at the beginning of the school year. Tests are transferred, period by period, to the respective Collaboration Teacher. At the end of the day tests are placed in teacher box. Completed test are not carried by students! G.E. teachers may pick up test from Collaboration. Following Collaboration procedures and sending students protects you and helps our students.
36
Collaboration procedures (cont.) The Dilemma Many SPED students struggle with processing delays: ▫ Give adequate time to complete test. ▫ If they do not complete the test, it is recommended to grade “as complete”. The Dilemma: ▫ Missing instructional time the following day. ▫ Missing work time in D.S. “It only digs the hole deeper for SPED kids!”
37
Collaboration procedures (cont.) The Dilemma Teachers suggestions: ▫Answer every other question. ▫Answer essential questions that assess the desired construct to be assessed. ▫Test on Block Days (if possible).

Specific questions: Student placement process- too many students placed in one class! Why don’t the SPED teachers come into our classes and observe, or help give us teaching ideas? Why doesn’t my aide come to class on time, or why does she leave early?
41
Specific Questions: How do I know if a student in my class is enrolled in Special Ed. ? You don’t have to wait, look at Aeries- Attendance view- next to the student name under “Program” look at the following codes: R= Resource S= SDC Z = Exit from SPED O = 504 IHP= Health
42
Specific questions cont.: Why do I have to provide information for the IEPs? Do I have to attend IEP meetings?
