PSALM 27 The LORD is my Light and my Salvation 3 October 2010

I.FAITH’S CHALLENGE: MY ENEMIES AND MY FOES ATTACK ME (27:2-3, 12) a. David had undeserved enemies who treated him unjustly Psalm 27:1-3 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. 3 Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident.

I.FAITH’S CHALLENGE: MY ENEMIES AND MY FOES ATTACK ME (27:2-3, 12) a. David had undeserved enemies who treated him unjustly Psalm 27:12 12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, breathing out violence.

I.FAITH’S CHALLENGE: MY ENEMIES AND MY FOES ATTACK ME (27:2-3, 12) b. We too face both physical and spiritual enemies 2 Corinthians 4:8-10 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

II. FAITH’S CONVICTION: I WILL SEE THE GOODNESS OF THE LORD (27:1-3, 4-6, 7-10, 13) a. Real faith is confident of God’s goodness and salvation Psalm 27:1-3 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. 3 Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident.

II. FAITH’S CONVICTION: I WILL SEE THE GOODNESS OF THE LORD (27:1-3, 4-6, 7-10, 13) b. Real faith finds safety and security in God’s presence Psalm 27:4-6 4 One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. 5 For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock. 6 Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD.

II. FAITH’S CONVICTION: I WILL SEE THE GOODNESS OF THE LORD (27:1-3, 4-6, 7-10, 13) c. Real faith struggles with doubt but overcomes it Psalm 27:7-10 7 Hear my voice when I call, O LORD; be merciful to me and answer me. 8 My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, LORD, I will seek. 9 Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, O God my Saviour. 10 Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.

II. FAITH’S CONVICTION: I WILL SEE THE GOODNESS OF THE LORD (27:1-3, 4-6, 7-10, 13) c. Real faith struggles with doubt but overcomes it 2 Kings 6:15-17 15 When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh, my lord, what shall we do?” the servant asked. 16 “Don't be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 And Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes so he may see.” Then the LORD opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

II. FAITH’S CONVICTION: I WILL SEE THE GOODNESS OF THE LORD (27:1-3, 4-6, 7-10, 13) c. Real faith struggles with doubt but overcomes it Psalm 27:13 13 I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.

III. FAITH’S COMMITMENT: YOUR FACE, LORD, I WILL SEEK (27:4, 8, 11-12, 14) a. Real faith seeks God and not just his benefits Psalm 27:4 4 One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. Psalm 27:8 8 My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, LORD, I will seek.

III. FAITH’S COMMITMENT: YOUR FACE, LORD, I WILL SEEK (27:4, 8, 11-12, 14) b. Real faith asks God to help us live righteously Psalm 27:11 11 Teach me your way, O LORD; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors.

Psalm 27:12 12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, breathing out violence.

III. FAITH’S COMMITMENT: YOUR FACE, LORD, I WILL SEEK (27:4, 8, 11-12, 14) c. Real faith waits for the LORD Psalm 27:13-14 13 I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.

III. FAITH’S COMMITMENT: YOUR FACE, LORD, I WILL SEEK (27:4, 8, 11-12, 14) c. Real faith waits for the LORD Hebrews 11:1 1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

III. FAITH’S COMMITMENT: YOUR FACE, LORD, I WILL SEEK (27:4, 8, 11-12, 14) c. Real faith waits for the LORD Hebrews 11:1 1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 12:2-3 2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

III. FAITH’S COMMITMENT: YOUR FACE, LORD, I WILL SEEK (27:4, 8, 11-12, 14) c. Real faith waits for the LORD 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
