“Triumph Over Temptation” Matthew 4:1-11 ‘The Temptation of Jesus’

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. 2 For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry. 3 During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, 6 and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’ ” 7 Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’ ” 8 Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.” 10 “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’ ” 11 Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.

Exodus 13:18 So God led them in a roundabout way through the wilderness toward the Red Sea. Thus the Israelites left Egypt like an army ready for battle. Deuteronomy 8:2 Remember how the Lord your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands. Matthew 4:1-2 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. 2 For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry.

Jesus successfully redeems us from the areas of temptations where we have failed!

Exodus 16:3 “If only the Lord had killed us back in Egypt,” they moaned. “There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death.” Matthew 4:3-4 During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”

Exodus 17:1,7 At the Lord’s command, the whole community of Israel left the wilderness of Sin and moved from place to place. Eventually they camped at Rephidim, but there was no water there for the people to drink … Moses named the place Massah (which means “test”) and Meribah (which means “arguing”) because the people of Israel argued with Moses and tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord here with us or not?” Matthew 4:5-7 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, 6 and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’ ” 7 Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’ ”

Exodus 32:1, 4 When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. “ Come on, ” they said, “ make us some gods who can lead us. We don ’ t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt. ” … Then Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they exclaimed, “ O Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt! ” Matthew 4:8-11 8 Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 “ I will give it all to you, ” he said, “ if you will kneel down and worship me. ” 10 “ Get out of here, Satan, ” Jesus told him. “ For the Scriptures say, ‘ You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him. ’ ” 11 Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.

Romans 7:15,18-19, 24-25a I don ’ t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don ’ t do it. Instead, I do what I hate … 18 And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can ’ t. 19 I want to do what is good, but I don ’ t. I don ’ t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway … 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? 25 Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 Corinthians 10:13, 15:57 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure … But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
