Woodlawn County Landfill  Before WHC

A New Name – “New Beginnings - The Woodlawn Wildlife Area”

Wildlife Habitat Enhancements  planting of hundreds of native trees and shrubs  creation of native wildflower meadows on top of the landfill  raptor perches  bluebird/ songbird nest boxes  native warm season grasses and wildflowers  vernal pools  brush piles ...the list goes on!

Service Stations  Former Service stations  Underground Storage tanks  Soil removal combined with phytoremediation using native plants Photo courtesy of www.wrdenvironmental.com

Service Stations  Community “Pocket Parks” in urban area  Small habitats for wildlife (birds, pollinators, etc)  Cost savings of $100,000’s per location  Reduce “Urban Heat Island Effect” Photo courtesy of www.wrdenvironmental.com

Before & After Photos courtesy of www.wrdenvironmental.com Photos courtesy of www.ci.glendale.ca.us/parks

Final thoughts…  Often reduce cost of cleanup which can be used for projects/ education on site.  Landowner regarded as a positive contributor to the community; = priceless PR!  Demonstration site for others to emulate
