What is a prefix? A phrase that goes BEFORE a word and changes the meaning of the word For example: Mega-BlizzardBlizzardMini-Blizzard
20
With the Metric System… KilometerMeterMillimeter kmmmm LargestBase UnitSmallest Distance from the middle school to the high school. Length of an acoustic guitar. Height of a penny.
21
Abbreviations LARGER----------------------smaller khdk (or da) Udc m Kilohectodekadecicenti milli For example: KilometerMeterMillimeter kmmmm
22
What is the abbreviation for each unit? EXAMPLE: Decimeter = dm 1) Dekaliter 2) Centimeter 3) Milligram dkl (or dal) cm mg
23
What is the unit? EXAMPLE: cg = centigram 1)ml 2)m 3)kg milliliter meter kilogram
24
Why is the Metric System better? Conversions are MUCH EASIER! Everything is based on ten, so you just need to move the decimal! LETS PRACTICE!
25
Rules to Convert with Metric 1.Rewrite the number exactly as it appears 2.LIGHTLY put in the decimal point where it currently belongs 3.Find the current unit symbol in the chart above and count the number of spaces to the new unit symbol, noting if your movement is to the right or to the left. 4.Place your pencil on the lightly marked decimal point and count the number of spaces determined from step 3 either to the left or right, creating little egg crates” under each number 5.Mark a DARK, BIG decimal point at the new space 6.If there are any “empty egg crates”, fill them with zeroes.
26
Practice Problems 1) 30 cm = _____ m 2)22 kg = _____ g 3)423 ml = _____cl 42.3 22,000 0.3

Mass Questions #21-23 21. Mass is the measure of the amount of matter in an object. 22. Kilogram is the SI Basic Unit for mass. Gram is the METRIC Base unit for mass. 23.Weight is the measure of the force of GRAVITY on an object. Weight would change if you went to the moon (the moon has 1/6 the gravity of Earth), but your mass would stay the same!
62
Mass Question #24- Steps to use a Balance 1.Place the balance on a flat/level surface. 2.Make sure all riders are moved to ZERO. 3.Make sure the balance is calibrated (the lines match up). 4.Place the object on the pan and allow it to settle. 5.Move the LARGEST rider first. 6.Stop when the lever hits the bottom and move the rider back ONE notch. 7.Repeat step 6 with all riders, going from largest to smallest. 8.Your goal is to move the riders until the two lines match up. 9.Add up all of the positions where you put the riders to find the mass of the object in the pan. Remember to guess one decimal place and DON’T FORGET UNITS!!
63
Question #25
64
Timeline of the Penny 1909-1982 – 95% copper – 5% zinc (exception= 1943 penny was steel coated with zinc due to a copper shortage during World War II) 1982-present day – 97.5% zinc – 2.5% copper
