Public Service Announcements And writing for persuasion

Three Minutes to Talk! 12:48- be back in your seats, ready to learn! 12:48- be back in your seats, ready to learn!

Objectives Support an argument with statistics, quotations and examples in well developed paragraph Identify persuasive techniques by completing a graphic organizer Activities Do Now - ESPN Articles “Senators Send Letter to Roger Goodell” “Hope Solo and the Domestic Violence…” Class Review/Discussion Persuasive Paragraph Notes Write topic sentence PSA v. Ad: Breaking Down the PSA

Do Now – Quietly and On Your Own  Read the Hope Solo article (if you haven’t already) and answer the questions  Read the article titled “Senators Send Letter to Roger Goodell”  Be ready to discuss both as a class

Non-fiction Articles  Where is each article from? Are they credible?  Where could you look to check the information?  What is the issue?  Who is involved?

Persuasive Paragraphs Intro and topic sentences

What is Persuasion?  Persuasion is a BIG term that covers influencing a person’s belief, attitudes, motivations, and intentions.  Really – convincing someone to agree with you!

Consider This… Should the NFL have harsher punishment for those who commit domestic violence?

Question: Should the NFL have harsher punishment for those who commit domestic violence? -State your position on the argument -State your main idea -Do not include first or second person pronouns 1 st /2 nd person pronouns to avoid: I Me We You Us

Question: Should the NFL have harsher punishment for those who commit domestic violence? -A topic sentence essentially tells what the rest of the paragraph is about. -All sentences after it have to give more information about the sentence, prove it by offering facts about it, or describe it.

Topic Sentences and Controlling Ideas:  Every topic sentence will have a topic and a controlling idea. The controlling idea shows the direction the paragraph will take.  Topic Sentence: There are many reasons why pollution in ABC Town is the worst in the world.  The topic is “pollution in ABC Town is the worst in the world” and the controlling idea is “many reasons.”

Example and Practice  Topic Sentence: To be an effective CEO requires certain characteristics.  The topic is “To be an effective CEO” and the controlling idea is certain characteristics.  Topic Sentence: There are many possible contributing factors to global warming.  The topic is "contributing factors to global warming" and the controlling factor is "many reasons."  Topic Sentence: Fortune hunters encounter many difficulties when exploring a shipwreck.  The topic is “exploring a shipwreck” and the controlling idea is “many difficulties.”

On Your Own  Write your own topic sentence that includes your topic and controlling idea for the question: Question: Should the NFL have harsher punishment for those who commit domestic violence?

Public Service Announcements

 are messages in the public interest disseminated by the media without charge  the objective is raising awareness, changing public attitudes and behavior towards a social issue.

Typically PSAs…  are short (usually 60 seconds or less)  present one single issue  inform the viewer of key, relevant facts  have a clear call to action (usually indicated through text on screen)  might or might not include people  might or might not use music  sometimes use voice-overs  sometimes use special effects (like black and white)  might use transitions/editing to enhance the video  aim to leave a lasting impact

 Who is the intended audience? (children, parents, teens, college students, Republicans, etc.)  What is the purpose?  Is it a PSA (trying to change behavior or opinion) or an AD (trying to sell you something)  What is effective? (What do you notice, what makes you pay attention?)

Three Minutes to Talk! 12:48 - be back in your seats, ready to learn! 12:48 - be back in your seats, ready to learn!

Do Now –  Here’s a topic sentence: Students should be required to wear uniforms in school.  On your own paper, write: What are two things you could say to support that sentence? (whether you agree, or not…)

Finding Evidence to Support your Claim

Why…?  Information is knowledge, and knowledge is power.  If you want someone to rally to your cause, support your position, or put you in a position of authority, you need to be able to back up your positions and sway others from theirs.

Find GOOD Evidence  If someone is trying to explain that "the government is beaming mind control rays through our cell phones,” it’s probably not good…

Citing Direct Quotes  Put all direct quotes in quotation marks  Parenthetical citations go at the end  (author’s last name and page number)  when citing a book  Web pages, articles, etc. require different things in the parenthetical citations, so ask if you’re not sure.  End punctuation goes AFTER the parenthetical citation.

On Your Own…  Find TWO pieces of evidence to support your topic sentence from last class.  Underneath each quote, explain how it supports your topic sentence  DO NOT LOSE THIS! We will be combining everything to create an entire essay.

Types of Persuasion Ethos, Pathos, and Logos

Types of Persuasion  The goal of argumentative writing is to persuade your audience that your ideas are valid, or more valid than someone else's.  The Greek philosopher Aristotle divided the means of persuasion, appeals, into three categories-- Ethos, Pathos, Logos.

Ethos: (Credibility or ethical appeal)  means convincing by the character of the author.  We tend to believe people whom we respect.  Examples:  "As a doctor, I am qualified to tell you that this course of treatment will likely generate the best results.“  "You know me – I’ve taught Sunday School at your church for years, babysat your children, and served as a playground director for many summers.“  The use of celebrities – since we “know” and “respect” them  means convincing by the character of the author.  We tend to believe people whom we respect.  Examples:  "As a doctor, I am qualified to tell you that this course of treatment will likely generate the best results.“  "You know me – I’ve taught Sunday School at your church for years, babysat your children, and served as a playground director for many summers.“  The use of celebrities – since we “know” and “respect” them

Pathos: (Emotional appeal)  means persuading by appealing to the reader's emotions.  Should create an emotional response in the reader/viewer  "If we don’t move soon, we’re all going to die! Can’t you see how dangerous it would be to stay?“  "Where would we be without this tradition? Ever since our forefathers landed at Plymouth Rock, we’ve celebrated Thanksgiving without fail, making more than cherished recipes. We’ve made memories.“  #1 - Example  means persuading by appealing to the reader's emotions. We’ve made memories.“  #1 - Example

Logos: (Logical appeal)  means persuading by the use of reasoning  "The data is perfectly clear: this investment has consistently turned a profit year-over-year, even in spite of market declines in other areas.“  "More than one hundred peer-reviewed studies have been conducted over the past decade, and none of them suggests that this is an effective treatment for hair loss."  means persuading by the use of reasoning  "The data is perfectly clear: this investment has consistently turned a profit year-over-year, even in spite of market declines in other areas.“  "More than one hundred peer-reviewed studies have been conducted over the past decade, and none of them suggests that this is an effective treatment for hair loss."

In Your Groups… 1.Pick your PSA topic and come tell your teacher. Once you pick it, you are stuck with it! 2.Brainstorm ideas for your PSA.  What type(s) of persuasion do you want to use?  What might your PSA look like?  Who will play what roles?  What types of evidence can you use to convince your audience to take action, or agree with your position? ** You will have to write a script eventually, so think about that… **

On your Own…  You will write a persuasive paragraph about your PSA topic.  Using your PSA topic, fill out the outline form for the PSA Solo Paragraph

Objectives Support an argument with statistics, quotations and examples in well developed paragraph Identify persuasive techniques by completing a graphic organizer Activities Do Now – Explaining Evidence/Support Persuasive Paragraph Notes Explaining Evidence How To: Script Writing PSA Group Work: Discuss audience and types of persuasion Fill out planning guide Begin writing script Homework: -Turn your PSA Paragraph outline into an entire paragraph. Due next class! -PSA and Script due: - Oct. 20 Y-day -Oct. 21 X- Day Homework: -Turn your PSA Paragraph outline into an entire paragraph. Due next class! -PSA and Script due: - Oct. 20 Y-day -Oct. 21 X- Day

DO NOW:  Using the topic sentence you wrote and evidence found last class:  underneath, beside, or on another sheet of paper, EXPLAIN how your quote helps support your topic sentence.

Explaining and Elaborating Direct quotes in writing

Introducing and Explaining Quotes…  The main problem with using quotations happens when writers assume (…don’t assume things…) that the meaning of the quotation is obvious.  Quotations need to be taken from their original context and integrated fully into their new textual surroundings  Every quotation needs to have your own words appear in the same sentence.

Ways to introduce quotes…  X states, “__________.”  As the world-famous scholar X explains it, “________.”  As claimed by X, “______.”  In her article _______, X suggests that “_________.”  In X’s perspective, “___________.”  X concurs when she notes, “_______.” Replace X with the author’s first and last name or last name. Never refer to the author by only their first name… you’re not on a first-name basis

Example topic sentence with introduced quote…  The NFL should definitely have harsher punishments for athletes who commit crimes of domestic violence. Former president and domestic violence survivor, Bill Clinton agrees, stating, “no incident should be ignored…because if you do that, it just gets progressively worse” (dailymail). Direct Quote Introduction

Explaining Quotes…  Now that you’ve successfully used the quotation in your sentence, it’s time to explain what that quotations means  either in a general sense or in the context of your argument

Example Templates…  In other words, X asserts __________.  In arguing this claim, X argues that __________.  X is insisting that _________.  What X really means is that ____________.  The basis of X’s argument is that ___________.

Example topic sentence with introduced quote AND quote explained  The NFL should definitely have harsher punishments for athletes who commit crimes of domestic violence. Former president and domestic violence survivor, Bill Clinton agrees, stating, “no incident should be ignored…because if you do that, it just gets progressively worse” (dailymail). In other words, Clinton asserts that without a harsh enough punishment, domestic violence situations will only get worse.

On Your Own… (10min)  Look at your PSA Solo Outline (from last class)  Make sure all quotes are introduces (remember, IN THE SAME SENTENCE!)  Make sure your explanations make sense in supporting your argument.

PSA Group Project Writing a Script

PSA Group Work:  Discuss what your PSA will look like  Begin writing your script. Write it on your own paper – it will have to be typed later (we will provide laptops or library time to get this done…)  Script and PSA due:  Y Day: Oct. 20  X Day – Oct.21

Script Formatting Requirements:  12 point  Times New Roman  1 inch margins  Page numbers  Separate title page

Title page Title Names Ms. Frost September 26, 2014

On the page  Give helpful details about the setting and characters.  Use slug lines before each scene: what is the setting?  A character's name should go in ALL CAPS above their dialogue  You can also put instructions, such as pauses, or movement, in italics

For Example… The godfather

At the top of the page the SLUG tells use where we are – Don’s office, during the day Then it describes what we see – here you should use your IMAGINATION!!

CHARACTER – all caps What the character does. This should be italicized Everything is centered!

Group PSA Rubric: 54321 Opinion: The PSA clearly states an opinion on the topic. The audience is aware of what the PSA will tell them. Support: The PSA provides evidence and advice to support the opinion. This evidence is explicitly stated. If applicable support uses examples. Word Choice/Vocabulary: The word choice and topic are relevant to the chosen audience. Students demonstrate understanding of how audience affects vocabulary.
