AP English III Bellringer…  Get an iPad. DO NOT get a MacBook unless there are no more iPads.  Go to todaysmeet.com/patterson1  Respond to the following question in a complete sentences:  What do you think Jonathan Edwards’ purpose is in this sermon? (Remember, you cannot say “to scare…”)  Be sure to respond with YOUR first and last name!

Your Task…  With your group, your task is to research an assigned aspect of the historical and literary context for The Crucible and create a six to eight ( 6-8 ) minute presentation of your findings.  Your presentation must effectively and engagingly teach your classmates the most significant, relevant information you learned while researching your topic.  While I will give you a topic area on which to concentrate, it is up to you to determine how to go about researching it, what information to include, and how to compile your findings into an effective presentation.

Your Basic Guidelines…  YOU MAY NOT USE WIKIPEDIA. NONEGOTIABLE.  You must provide a typed, printed, properly formatted MLA works cited page that credits ALL of the sources you used for your presentation.  You may NOT ask me:  “Is it ok to use PowerPoint?” X  “What should we use to present this?”  “What information should I include?”  Etc.  You must start becoming be more independent and self-directed in your learning – think for yourself and be creative. I know you are capable of making responsible, appropriate decisions at this point in your academic career; my job is to force you to do so.

Your Other Assignments…  To provide you with an adequate amount of time to work on this assignment, you will take your quiz for vocabulary 3.1 on Quia. The quiz will have a ten minute time limit and will open tonight by 6pm and close on Monday night at 11:59pm. You will be allowed two attempts, but will not be able to make this quiz up in tutorials.  At the beginning of class on Monday, you will submit one CCQC paragraph responding to the following:  What is one method Edwards’ uses to achieve his purpose in “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” Remember, you must identify the purpose, before you can identify how it is achieved!

Your Helpful Hints…  In order to determine on what you should specifically focus your research and presentation, you need to have a basic understanding of The Crucible.  The Research Databases (which you can access from the CHHS Library Home Page), guarantee that you are working with credible sources. Additionally, they almost always provide an MLA citation for you, which minimizes the amount of work you have to do. http://www.gcisd- k12.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=6277  Think about how you learn best in your classes. What teaching/presentation styles techniques do you find to be the most effective?

Your Helpful Hints…  If you do not find lecture particularly effective, or you are easily bored by colorless presentations with no images, don’t lecture or make a colorless presentation with no images.  If interactive, multimedia, and/or nontraditional presentations typically help you learn best, consider creating an interactive, multimedia, and/or nontraditional presentation.  I love color (shocking, I know) and creativity and expect to see both in your presentations.  Consult the rubric (on the last slide of this presentation) for more information about how your work on this project will be assessed

Your Group Assignments  Group 1: Puritan Society  Group 2: Massachusetts Bay Colony (in 1680-1700)  Group 3: The Salem Witch Trials  Group 4: McCarthyism/Red Scare  Group 5: Arthur Miller  Group 6: Setting, Major Themes and Characters for The Crucible and the Structure of a Dramatic Tragedy  Group 7: Modern Connections to The Crucible
