Why continue in Spanish according to students… “I dropped out midway through Spanish 5-6 and I regret it. I wish I had Spanish class all through high school. There are many bilingual opportunities in the workforce that I don't qualify for because I'm not proficient enough in Spanish.” “I dropped out midway through Spanish 5-6 and I regret it. I wish I had Spanish class all through high school. There are many bilingual opportunities in the workforce that I don't qualify for because I'm not proficient enough in Spanish.” Yvonne Munch “Besides having a lot of credits for a Spanish minor already through Rio, all of the Spanish credits I took in high school were really useful when registering for classes and applying for housing at NAU. Since all the college credit puts you at a higher class standing than the rest of the incoming freshman, I never had a problem with getting good class times/professors I wanted. Housing is also based on your class standing, so the more college credits you have, the better chance you will have of living where you want on campus.” “Besides having a lot of credits for a Spanish minor already through Rio, all of the Spanish credits I took in high school were really useful when registering for classes and applying for housing at NAU. “I think students underestimate how useful being able to speak Spanish is! The Rio credits eliminated my foreign language requirements at ASU and made a Spanish minor alongside my Political Science major less time consuming to attain. Outside of academics is where it really pays off though; I make more money at my job because I can sell to customers my coworkers can't even talk to. It's not just another class to take with your friends or to knock out college credits, its a practical skill you can use daily in Arizona.” “I think students underestimate how useful being able to speak Spanish is! Testimonials “I'm loving it at UofA. I'm majoring in aerospace engineering and minoring in Spanish and I'm on a three-year plan. “I'm loving it at UofA. I'm majoring in aerospace engineering and minoring in Spanish and I'm on a three-year plan. Because I got a 5 on the AP Spanish Literature test, I got credit for all the classes I needed for my Spanish minor, except two, one Spanish language class and one Spanish literature class. … the literature class was almost exactly like your AP literature class! Almost all the authors were the same and a few of the stories and poems our teacher picked were the same too. … it was actually easier than your class.”

Testimonials, cont’d “I’m now a Spanish Literature major at Dartmouth, focusing on literature of the Iberian Peninsula. I’ll be entering my junior year of college this fall, with my major almost completed!...I will be leaving to study abroad in Madrid…All of us students will be living with host families…I’m so excited!” “The scores on my exams let me jump straight into major courses.”

Testimonials, cont’d My classes are wonderful. I believe your class has well prepared me for classes outside of the Spanish subject. If anything, it prepared me more than any other AP class I have ever taken. Your short quizzes are very characteristic of what we call "quiz sections" at the University of Washington. In addition to a lecture class for a subject, once a week there is a quiz section where a short 5 minute quiz is given to help students understand what they do or do not know so far. Also, the way your class is structured is very characteristic of subjects such as Geography, Political Science, and even Physics. The reading is done at home, and then discussed in class just as we have done in AP Spanish. Please let your students know that it will definitely pay off to work hard in your two AP classes.
