4 What is a “Dashboard”? A dashboard is a visual display of the most important information needed to achieve one or more objectives, consolidated and arranged on a single screen so the information can be monitored at a glance. -Stephen Few (March 20. 2004) “Dashboard Confusion” Intelligent Enterprise

5 Characteristics, broken down  Visual and consistent displays  The information shown is tied to a specific objective  Consolidated, single screen  Convey the message ‘at a glance’

6 A Dashboard is NOT:  Something for data exploration and analysis  A portal  A Scorecard  Required to be ‘web-based’  Broad focused for all audiences

7 Common Mistakes in Dashboard Design  Exceeding the boundaries of a single screen  Supplying inadequate context for the data  Displaying excessive detail or precision  Expressing measures indirectly  Choosing inappropriate display media  Introducing meaningless variety  Using poorly designed display media  Encoding quantitative data incorrectly  Arranging information poorly  Highlighting important information ineffectively or not at all  Cluttering the display with visual effects  Misusing or overusing color  Designing an unattractive visual display - Stephen Few Information Dashboard Design
